Scale of professional interests
Investigation of molecular-cell mechanisms of action of selected herbal extracts and particular biological active components that collectively provoke a variety of physiological responses, have a wide range of medicinal applications, including cancerogenesis, atherogenesis, inflammations, neurodegeneration, autoimmune pathologies, viral/retro and bacterial diseases, progeria, skin wounds, eczema, burns, psychological disorders etc. Investigation of several classes of compounds common to most plants, including polyphenolics, flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), etc, as well as two very active classes of unique constituents – the phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin) and the naphthodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin). Hence, therapy using free-radical scavenging antioxidants has potential to prevent, delay or ameliorate many of disorders. Determination of the natural antioxidant compounds of plant extracts will help to develop new drug candidates for antioxidant therapy.
Models – chemical system (DPPH stable radical) and biological – red blood cells, hemoglobin, hemolysis, plant cell and tissue cultures, microorganisms, rats.
The aim of current work was to elucidate in vitro and in vivo different biological activities of various extracts, e.g. cytotoxic, photodynamic and free radical scavenging activities, determine the relationship of flavonoids composition, antiradical, antimicrobial and antihemolytic activities in chemical and biological systems; to examine the influence of HY on structure and function of Hb; evaluation of red blood cells as model system for screening of hypericin efficacy as a photodynamic agent.
