In 1938, the Chairs of Algebra and that of Geometry were formed in the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Yerevan State University and were headed by academician A. Shahinyan, and Professor J. Khojanetyan, respectively. In 1944, the two chairs were merged into a single Chair of Algebra and Geometry. Since 1944 to 1973, N. Gasparyan was the head of the Chair. He was succeeded by L. Matevosyan (1974-1979), E. Mirzakhanyan (1980-1985) and Professor Yu. Movsisyan (1986-2013). Since 2013, Professor V.Atabekyan is the head of the Chair.

The chair of Algebra and Geometry runs the graduate program of “Algebra, Geometry”.

The chair "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics" that is the unique among those in institutions of higher education of the RA was established in the Yerevan State University by efforts of G.A.Ambartsumian, A.A.Talalyan and S.Kh.Tumanyan. The first head of the chair became associate professor G.A.Ambartsumian, Ph.D. in mathematics and physics (1967-79). The initial staff of the chair included: S.Kh.Tumanyan, N.A.Petrosyan, L.S.Nikoghosyan, A.A.Frangulyan, E.A.Harutyunyan, T.P.Ghazanchyan.

R.V.Ambartsumian had led the chair during 1979-1986.

E.A.Danielyan had led the chair during 1986-2011.

V.K.Ohanyan is the head of the chair since September 2011-up to present.

In addition to the specialization "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics" at the department of Mechanics and Mathematics, a general course has been held at all departments of the YSU.

Several students of the chair had been sent to the Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev State Universities, where they were skilled by specialists of the above mentioned institutions. After returning to Yerevan they have enhanced the staff of the chair. Those are professors E.A.Danielyan, V.V.Sarafyan (doctors in Mathematics and Physics), associate professors N.Kh. Mesropyan, S.M. Narimanyan, A.Kh. Simonyan, K.V. Gasparyan.

Starting from 1970’s Ph.D. students in different fields of probability theory are being prepared in Armenia. Due to efforts of acad. R.V.Ambartsumian direction of stochastic geometry has been founded.

The main scientific directions of the chair are Random Processes and their Applications, Queuing Theory, Stochastic Geometry, Mathematical, Applied and Bayes Statistics, Probabilistic Methods in Bioinformatics.

There are two master programs in the Chair of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics: “Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics” and “Applied Statistics and Data Science”, which started in 2018-2019 study year.

Students at the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics have the opportunity to continue their studies in France, at the Master's Degree at the University of Le Mans.

The Master Degree Educational Program in Actuarial Science commenced in 2001 at the Yerevan State University, and in 2003 the Bachelor Degree Educational Program has been brought in as well. The aim of the program was to provide students with knowledge and skills in adjacent fields of mathematics and actuarial science, which are essential for an actuary and for passing the qualification exams. In 2007 the Department of Actuarial Mathematics has been established at the YSU. Since 2009 two Masters Course Programs have been developed and applied at the Department: first is “Actuarial Mathematics” and the second is “Risk Management”. The department has business relations with potential employers of future actuaries and risk managers, such as Central Bank of RA, “Nork” Information-Analytical Center, insurance companies, banks and other organizations.

Dynamic market environment repeatedly raises financial risks of companies, which could bring to their bankruptcy. Risk assessment and possible developments forecasting is the only way of prevention from such negative effects.

Risk managers have been talked about in the west since middle 1980’s – early 1990’s when a significant demand arose for them. Now days both powerful huge financial and small western organizations in have the position of risk manager in the staff as risk management became a strategic instrument for optimization of capital usage and risk managers are high qualified economist-analysts.

The other, very old profession is the actuary.

Actuary (lat. actuarius) is a specialist with appropriate qualification, who analyses financial consequences of risks, evaluates probability of happening particular forthcoming events with mathematical, statistical and other methods, measures pensions, annuity, insurance premium, insurance rates, insurance fee, technical reserves and etc. We may say, that actuary is ad-hoc risk manager.

Very few people were familiar with these professions in Armenia till 2000’s. But today the demand for certified actuaries and risk managers increases from day to day. They are in no way just theorists: first of all they are “partitioning economist-mathematicians” and their deep knowledge of economics and finance, skills of mathematical methods and modeling is the strongest side of them.

Main methodological principle of both Masters and Bachelors Course Programs is to emphasize comprehension of basis of methods and models which are used in practice and understanding of their correlation with financial and economical theories. Students study probability theory, applied statistics, probabilistic analysis of operations, actuarial mathematics, insurance, financial mathematics, stochastic finance, and financial analysis.

At the well-known foreign universities programs for risk managers and actuaries are separated, but, while developing our study programs, we have come to find out that a lot of courses are overlapping; actually this separation is due to very strong specialization in other countries. We consider combined study program for both specializations at Bachelors’ but nevertheless students are free to choose appropriate specialized courses during specialization time (starting from 5th semester). At Masters’ we consider separated two study programs for actuaries and for risk managers.

Upon the graduation students get the degree of Bachelor or Master of Actuarial and Financial Mathematics.

Our course study programs are developed to enable graduating students to pass exams for appropriate certificates.

Till 1988 in Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of YSU worked branch of mechanics with Chairs of theoretical mechanics and theories of elasticity and plasticity. In 1988 Faculty of Mechan-ics was founded, and in 2007 Faculty Mathematics and Mechanics was founded, in which the Chair of Mechanics works.

The general scientific and educational directions of the Chair of mechanics are "mechanics of de-formable rigid body" and "management and stability of motion".

The chair's educational plans include modern directions of mathematics and mechanics, laboratory work on the theoretical mechanics and continuum mechanics.

There are two Master's programs in the Chair of Mechanics: "mechanics of deformable rigid body" and "management and stability of motion". Best of graduates can continue their study in post-graduate by following specialties: "mechanics of deformable rigid body" and "theoretical mechan-ics".

Today on the Chair teach three Academicians and one Member-Correspondent оf NAS of Ar-menia, six Doctors and fourteen Candidates of sciences.

The general research directions of the Chair are: problems of interaction of deformable media with physical-mechanical fields, contact and mixed problems of theory of elasticity, diffraction and radiation of waves in elastic and electroelastic media, differential games at multiple target sets, re-search of systems stability, management and supervision of dynamic systems in conflict situations and their application for mechanical systems.

The best students of different courses participated in scientific and research works of the Chair of Mechanics. The scientific and educational seminars work on the Chair. Professors and scientific workers of the Chair presented the results of their research works on different international confe-rences. The Chair often organizes international conferences with participations of students, post-graduate students and young scientists, in which the modern problems of mechanics are discussed.

The Chair of “Function Theory and Differential Equations” was formed in 2021 as a result of the union of the Chairs of “Mathematical Analysis and Function Theory” and “Differential Equations”.

The Chair of “Mathematical Analysis and Function Theory" was founded in 2012 by merging the chairs of "Mathematical Analysis" and " Function Theory". Academicians of NAS RA M. Jerbashyan, N. Arakelyan, G. Gevorkyan, corresponding members of NAS RA V. Martirosyan, Professors A. Petrosyan, H. Hayrapetyan were heads of those chairs for different years. Members of the chair gave lectures within the framework of bachelor և and master's programs.

The research work carried out by the staff of the chair refers to the theory of functions: real and complex analysis, orthogonal-biorthogonal systems, harmonic analysis and approximations.

The Chair of Differential Equations was founded in 1954 by academician R. Alexandryan. Professors H. Martirosyan, I. Khachatryan, T. Harutyunyan, A.Kamalyan, Kh. Khachatryan were heads of the chair for different years. The research work in the chair was devoted to the spectral theory of differential operators, different types of equations with partial derivatives, integral equations.

The curriculum of the Chair of Function Theory և Differential Equations contains the courses of Mathematical Analysis, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis and Ordinary Differential Equations, which are taught in all bachelor's degree programs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics.

The chair has scientific collaborations with the universities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris, Rostov, Warsaw, Boston, Tbilisi, Minsk, South Carolina, Berlin, Stockholm. One academician of NAS RA, one correspondent member of NAS RA, four professors and five associate professors are teaching in the chair.

Scientific laboratory “Theoretical Problems of Mechanics and Applications” was founded in 2012 at chair of Mechanics, faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of YSU.

As an area of natural sciences theoretical mechanics using mathematical methods deals with not real material objects, but with their models. These models under study are material points and system of material points, rigid bodies and systems of rigid bodies, deformable continuum media. Some research work is planned to perform in the framework of the project in various areas of contemporary mechanics, which are closely related with progress of science, technics and new technologies. Such investigations were done in chair of Mechanics, Mechanico-mathematical faculty of YSU, later and till 2010 in faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of YSU. Initially scientific laboratory of physico-technical problems was founded and then research work was done in the framework of thematic funding.
