OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST GEVORG JAHUKYAN “RETURNED” TO YSU
From now on classroom # 208 at YSU Faculty of Armenian Philology will be called after eminent linguist and scholar Gevorg Jahukyan.

This year marks the 95th anniversary of birth of the well-known linguist. On this occasion Chair of General Linguistics had initiated a conference.

“Academician Jahukyan is one of our brilliant scholars, distinguished pedagogues, erudite linguists,” - cutting the red ribbon, said Dean of this faculty Artsrun Avagyan.

The opening ceremony and the conference were attended by well-known experts from various universities, linguists, literary critics; many of them were Jahukyan’s students and then colleagues.

“I have heard from various people that Jahukyan, being a great scholar, did not establish his school. I do not agree with this opinion. If there are Jahukyan students, there are generations of linguists, who are guided by the principles developed by Jahukyan. It is no secret that Jahukyan, beginning with the second half of the 20th century until today, is the only scientist who made the propaganda of the Armenian language and linguistics on the international arena. Only these two circumstances are enough,” - said Head of the Chair of General Linguistics Vardan Petrosyan.

Three reports were made at the plenary session of the conference: “G. Jahukyan: the prominent figure of science”, “G. Jahukyan and contemporary Indo-European theories” and “G. Jahukyan's conceptual basics of universal linguistic theory”. The conference then continued in 3 sections.

The reports were made by the representatives of YSU, NAS RA Institute of Linguistics, ASPU, Vanadzor State Pedagogical Institute and YSULSC.

Gevorg Jahukyan was born in the village Shahnazar of Kalinino disctrict (now Metsavan, Lori Province). In 1927-1935 he studied at the Work School of Stepanakert. In 1935-1937 he studied at #1 secondary school in Yerevan, after which he entered the Faculty of Philology of YSU and graduated in 1941. In 1941-1943 he participated in the Great Patriotic War. In 1945-49 he delivered lectures at the Faculty of Philology. In 1948-57 he was Head of Chair of Foreign Languages, in 1957-70 – Head of Chair of Romance and Germanic Philology, and beginning with 1970 - Professor at the Chair of General Linguistics.

In 1959-1962 he was senior researcher at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of ArmSSR, from 1962 until the end of his life – director of this Institute. In 1968 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of ArmSSR, in 1974 - Academician.

He has an invaluable contribution to the establishment of modern Armenian linguistics. He has played a major role in the presentation of the achievements of the Armenian linguistic school to the international scientific community. Beginning with 1974 he was the member of the European Linguistic Society and beginning 1980 - USA Linguistic Society.

Gevorg Jahukyan died on July 8, 2005 in Yerevan. His bronze bust is in the foyer of YSU Main Building.
