Today, the conference “Public Communications: current challenges and development prospects in Armenia 2013” was held in YSU Hall after Palyans.
The conference was organized by YSU Faculty of Sociology and the Information and Public Communication Technology Centre of Yerevan State Linguistic University.
The conference aims at providing the communication and PR activities in the academic and practical environments, to focus on previous achievements, identify problems and development trends in the sphere, as well as to establish network for cooperation between the leading specialists in this field.
Welcoming speeches were made by the leading experts in this sphere, who stressed on the importance of such events and their own personal experiences. They presented the PR related specific problems and current issues via their own researches.
“The public relations sphere has gone through a long and difficult way. Back in the 90s the information war began, when our country was in military conflict. And just that time the sphere started to develop, the pioneers of which were the representatives of power structure and journalists. Today PR profession is more considered as a social science and not a journalistic one,” - said the founder of the Information and Public Communication Technology Centre of YSLU, Candidate of Political Sciences Arman Saghatelyan.
Dean of YSU Faculty of Sociology Arthur Mkrtichyan focused on the theoretical and practical issues of the field: “YSU undertakes definite steps on training specialists in the PR field. In 2014 the first specialists will graduate and will receive master’s degree. Of course, two years is not enough to prepare specialists for this young and still developing field, so there is still a lot to do.”
The special guest of the conference was the Professor, Doctor of Philosophy from Kiev State University, a prominent specialist in communication technologies, information wars, marketing and reviewer of strategic issues G. Pocheptsov.
“PR is a crisis specialization, so in case of Armenia the first specialists were the representatives of power structures. In western countries this specialization was put forward when the concept of “mass democracy” came into circulation. In the modern world changes are happening too fast, and at the same time along with these changes management systems are changing, too,” - said Georgy Pocheptsov.
The conference consisted of three sections: “Public sector current problems: PR development trends”, “Crisis communication and information security problems” and “Young Professionals’ Chair”, where speeches were made by the students and PhD students.
In addition, the conference was supported by the Armenian Public Relations Association, “SPRING PR” Company and Institute for Political and Sociological Consulting.
