Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the most prestigious in the world in the area of international law. YSU students are the winners of Armenian domestic competition.
Five HEI participated in the domestic contest in 2009, held on the 7-8th of February: YSU, European Regional and RA State Management academies, state pedagogical universities of Gyumri and Vanadzor.
As for the 1-4th stages each of the teams had to play the role of virtual lawyers and claimants. YSU team played both roles of lawyer and claimant in different stages.
In the semi-finals, held on the 8th of February, YSU team rival was the Management Academy team and in final European Regional Academy. The final was held in the Causational Court. The jury staff was: Head of the Department on International Juridical Cooperation of the Prosecutors Office Nelly Harutyunyan, lawyer Nazely Vardanyan and the founder of NGO ELSA-Armenia Irina Kharatyan.
YSU team won in all the nominations of the contest: Best Written Work, Best Narrator (YSU Team Captain Levon Gevorgyan is a three-time winner of this prize) and First Prize.
YSU Team members are: Levon Gevorgyan, Armenuhi Gargaloyan, Taron Simonyan, Ofelia Haroutyunyan, Tatevik Manoukyan and the coach is a Candidate of Juridical Sciences Yeghishe Kirakosyan.
This victory is not the only for our team in 2009, as last years team became the champion of Armenia and traveled to Washington, too. Though the performance of our team at the international level is not too great, but to compete with the 150 best teams it is already considerable experience, especially if we take into account that our team won in some contests there, too-said YSU team member Taron Simonyan.
If there are financial means, YSU team will take part in Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition from 21-28 March in Washington. By the way, last year the preliminary expenses for the participation were covered by YSU, X-Group and the Commonwealth of Armenian Lawyers in America.
