100 YEARS AFTER ADANA POGROMS
100 YEARS AFTER ADANA POGROMS
"After 100 years since the tragic events we have got an impressive work, which has overshadowed all the other studies".

This opinion was expressed by the director of the Institute of History of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Ashot Melkonyan about the monograph of historian, Academician Hrachik Simonyan Mass pogroms of Armenians in Cilicia (April 1909). The presentation of this book was organized at YSU Faculty of History today.

Starting to appreciate the scientific activities of our well-known historians, of course, we are trying to find the work, which is a masterpiece of research. When in my student years I got acquainted with the work of Academician Hrachik Simonyan on Turkish nationalism, it seemed to me that this work was the culmination of academic works,- said Ashot Melkonyan. Each of Hrachik Simonyans researches, according to Director of the Institute, used to exceed the earlier one for its depth and value.

Dean of YSU Faculty of History Edik Minasyan noted in his welcoming speech that exactly 100 years ago the Black Golgotha of Cilician Armenians started. 30-35 thousand Armenians were massacred; about 8 thousand were subjected to starvation, became the victims of epidemics and diseases. According to him, the studies of Armenian pogroms show that Hamidian massacres, that began in 1894-1896, continued until 1923, i.e. were carried out in stages, one of which was the Adana carnage.

The losses, inflicted by the Adana massacre, are horrific... our nation faced not only the enormous human and material losses: pogroms heavily influenced the psychology of people. The complex of a victim was formed, Armenian gene pool suffered enormous damage, ethnographic image changed, the social and public position of the Armenians also changed..., - said Mr. Minasyan, considering the book of Hrachik Simonyan invaluable from this aspect.

The Minister of Education and Science of the RA Spartak Seyranyan, a graduate of the Faculty of History, focused on the importance of such patriotic works. Today, our country has many challenges and our armenologists, especially historians have got a lot to do in this area. The time has come for Armenology to become politically meaningful category, the time, when we must speak about Political or Applied Armenology.

For a great contribution in the field of education and science and on the occasion of his 80th anniversary of birth Hrachik Simonyan was awarded the commemorative medal of the Ministry of Education and Science of the RA.

Before the presentation ceremony started the personal library fund of Hrachik Simonyan was opened at YSU Faculty of History, consisting of books, donated by the Academician to our students.

After the presentation of the book on the massacre a scientific conference devoted to the 100th anniversary of the pogroms of Armenians in Cilicia was opened. Outstanding historians and young scientists made reports during this conference.
