ARTHUR SAHAKYAN HAS BEEN ELECTED DEAN OF YSU FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS AND MECHANICS FOR ANOTHER FIVE YEARS
Today, Dean of YSU Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics has been re-elected. It is Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Associate Member of NAS RA Artur Sahakyan.

It should be noted that 34 of the 44 members of the Academic Council of this faculty participated in the session. Arthur Sahakyan was nominated for the dean’s position by 8 chairs of the faculty.

Artur Sahakyan, presenting his program, said that they plan to cooperate with the IBM Center for Innovative Solutions and Technologies (ISTC), as well as introduce a new Master Program "Applied Statistics and Data Processing".

 

Speaking about scientific and organizational issues, the Dean mentioned that they plan to assist the participation of staff in international conferences, as well as the further development of the annual summer school.

 

Touching upon the personnel issues of the faculty, Artur Sahakyan noticed that the primary and most difficult task is the involvement of young specialists: "Over the past ten years, more than 20 highly-qualified mathematicians have been trained at the faculty, but most of them are currently working in foreign universities, and some have moved to other fields. You need to find additional opportunities to use their potential. We need to intensify cooperation with foreign universities as well as with local organizations," - he added.

 

According to paragraphs 3 and 4 of the Dean Election Procedure of YSU Faculty, the dean of the faculty may be elected a professor or associate professor who has a scientific degree of a doctor or candidate and at least 5 years of scientific and pedagogical work experience. Dean is elected at the faculty council by secret ballot for a five-year term.


Artur Sahakyan studied at YSU Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics in 1972-1977. In 1981 he graduated from the post-graduate studies of the Institute of Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1987-2001 he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. Since 2001 he has been working as a senior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. In 2004-2008 he was the Head of Chair of Mathematical Analysis of YSU, and since 2007 he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Yerevan State University.
