THE EARTH DAY
THE EARTH DAY
"Most pressing issues of the society are in the sphere of environment in developed economies".

Such an opinion was expressed today by the Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, Ambassador Sergey Kapinos during the meeting with students in YSU Environmental L Resource Centre. To celebrate the April 22 - Earth Day, on the joint initiative of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia, Yerevan State University and Aarhus the representatives of governmental structures, lecturers, members of social organizations and students organized a meeting today.

Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan stressed on the importance of such meetings and discussions, considering them an additional reason to recall about the catastrophes that threaten our planet.

Head of the OSCE Yerevan Office Sergey Kapinos presented a lecture on the activities of the OSCE in the area of Environment: The success in the field of ecology will be provided, if we rely not only on political structures, but also on society. It will guarantee the participation of the community solutions in the field of environmental problems, - said Mr. Ambassador.

According to him, Earth Day is more a political initiative. Owing to the public movement in 1970 people, concerned about the environmental issues, began to talk aloud about the global problems that threaten the Earth. The tremendous feast, organized in the United States, drew public attention to the environmental problems. This event attracted nearly 20 million people and had its echoes all over the world.

Usually on the Earth Day the bell of peace rings around the world, calling people to feel the planetary community and apply joint efforts to preserve the beauty of our common home. The first bell was set up in New York, in the UN Office, - said the reporter.

Students, concerned about the environmental issues, asked numerous questions to experts in this field. On the question of one student what is a priority for our country: the economic benefit or the environment, Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan, said: Despite the fact that we all understand that the economy should grow, the damage to the nature and the environment should be minimized. Throughout the world, they first calculate the environmental risk, to draw attention only to the program, which is going to be realized.

The expert in the field of nature protection Karine Daniyelyan said that it is wrong to observe the economics and ecology as competitors: they are partners.

As a token of love for our planet and gratitude, following the example of Sergey Kapinos and Aram Harutyunyan, the participants of the conference planted about 30 trees in the neighborhood of the building of the Faculty of Law of Yerevan State University.
