STUDENT DEBATES RESTART AT YSU
The Debate Club of YSU Student Council restarts its activities.

The tradition of organizing debates on various topics between students of YSU was laid in 1990. YSU Student Council has made a decision to make more active this good tradition.

“When we developed our new action plan, we gave priority to such major events, as this one is,” - said the Head of YSU Student Debate Club Nver Kirakosyan.

More than 30 teams composed of 6 students each, so far participated in one-week training courses, where they were introduced to what the debate is, what are the principles of good speech, how to affect the opinion of the jury, etc. Two lectures on the rhetoric art and argumentation were delivered by YSU lecturers Atom Vardumyan and Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.

Applications to participate were submitted by more than 40 teams. 32 teams qualified and 192 students participated in the event. The competition will be held using the Olympic system, the defeated team leaves the competition. A total of 31 games will be held in the coming month.

On the first day of competition “Olympus” and “Law” teams competed. The topic of the debate was the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict: should we instill hatred towards the Azerbaijani people among the Armenian children from childhood or not. The draw decided which team should first express its position. Then everyone put forward their arguments.

The jury was comprised of YSU PhD and master students. The points were awarded following the criteria, decided in advance.

“Olympus” won, which believes that to instill the hatred towards Azerbaijani is not true. However, their arguments and the culture of debate were more convincing.

In the last rounds of the competition, the jury will include lecturers.
