YSU Institute of Pharmacy is one of the leading higher education institutions in the Republic of Armenia preparing high quality pharmacists. On the basis of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (since 2010 Pharmacology) that has been functioning at the Faculty of Chemistry of YSU for 23 years, in 2017 the Institute of Pharmacy was established. It is the vector to the assurance of the university education and high quality education, realization of educational, research and investment (innovation) activities, preparation of specialists with the qualification of pharmacists in line with international standards, which is one of the most important preconditions for the development of pharmaceutical industry in the Republic of Armenia.
YSU Institute of Pharmacy consists of 3 specialized chairs: pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy, pharmtechnology and pharmacy economics and management (PEM), biomedicine. Besides, there are research laboratories for the synthesis of potentially pharmacologically active compounds, medical and biological screening, production of galenic preparations, drug quality control and biotechnology. The chairs of the Institute consisting of high quality academic laboratories are installed with modern laboratory furniture and equipment and directed to nearly all fields of Pharmacy. Here laboratory and practical trainings of specialized disciplines, such as drug preparation technology (drugstore and industrial), pharmaceutical chemistry (including pharmacopoeia analysis), pharmacognosy, biotechnology, toxicological chemistry, pharmacology, drug economics and management, drug structure studies and quality control, hygiene, etc. are being conducted.
YSU Institute of Pharmacy employs the latest methods and technologies, which enable the students to practice thoroughly their theoretical knowledge. The Institute has a distance learning system that enables the students to organize online lectures with foreign partner universities.
YSU Institute of Pharmacy collaborates with the leading pharmaceutical and specialty related universities and research centers abroad and the Republic of Armenia, namely Belgorod National Research University of the Russian Federation, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Moscow State University, Universities of Rostock and Wismar of Germany, A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of RAS, Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” of NAS RA, L.A. Orbeli Institute of Physiology of NAS RA, “Arpimed” LLC, “Liqvor” Pharmaceuticals, “ASTGHIK” Medical Center, “Alfa-Pharm” and “Natali-Pharm” pharmaceutical companies, etc. The above mentioned institutions are involved in the process of laboratory and industrial trainings of specialized disciplines, as well as in the realization of graduation, Master’s and Ph.D. theses.
Within the framework of cooperation between YSU and “Alfa-Pharm”, a drugstore has been opened on the first floor of the Institute of Pharmacy, where industrial trainings and laboratory activities of “technology for drug preparation” discipline for the students are regularly organized. As a public drugstore, it simultaneously serves the population, as well as the students and academic staff. The drugstore combines the components of education and business in the field of pharmacy. Future pharmacists and pharmaceutists obtain the skills of pharmaceutical business: how the prices for medicines are formed, how to present medicines and cosmetics, how to work with clients, etc.
The graduates of YSU Pharmacy Institute can work in state and private institutions of pharmaceutics and specialty related fields as pharmacists, clinical pharmacists, pharmacist-technologists, pharmacist-chemists, pharmacist-representatives, experts, marketing specialists in pharmaceutics, researchers, lecturers, etc. both in the Republic of Armenia and abroad.
Today, the YSU Institute of Pharmacy offers students the opportunity to receive education within the joint programs affirmed by the pharmaceutical faculties of Belgorod National Research University of the Russian Federation and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, as a result of which the graduates are granted dual diplomas of pharmacists (pharmaceutists).
The student life of the Institute Pharmacy is also active. With the efforts of the Student Council and the Student Scientific Society of the Institute, scientific (conferences, seminars, participation in professional competitions, etc.) and cultural (intellectual games, “Best Laboratory Photo”, “Guess the Melody”, “Cinemania” or Game-Competitions, events dedicated to the International Day of Students, etc.) activities are regularly organized which foster intellectual abilities and strengthen practical knowledge of the students.
