Scientific-research Laboratory of General Biology
• Laboratory of General Biology is organized in 2005.

• Fundamental research in 6 themes is carried out in Laboratory of General Biology:

1. Laboratory of General Biology, Division of botany and mycology
Short Description of Scientific Laboratory Division
Fundamental research in areas of biota, taxonomy, ecology, physiology, and biotechnology of all fungal taxonomic groups are studied. The mycobiota of different taxonomic and ecological groups in natural and artificial ecosystems of Armenia are investigated: phytotrophic fungi, soil fungi, human mycosis agents, destructors of industrial materials and foodstuffs. The mycotoxigenic fungi which contaminate foodstuffs are identified. Monitoring of fungal biodiversity of unstudied regions of Armenia and Karabakh is carried out. Molecular, morphological and phylogeographical approaches of some ectomycorrhizal fungi are studied. Researches on revealing and selection of high-productive cultures of edible fungi are conducted them to be used in mushroom industry and pharmacology. Also the biological activity of vegetative extracts, which inhibit the development of pathogenic microorganisms is studied.
Using the materials of the staff researches 7 volumes of “Mycoflora of Armenia” are published, which are dedicated to peronosporal, hyphomycetal, rust, powder meal, unicellular pycnidial micromycetes and basidial macromycetes. 40 monographs and manuals are published as well.

2. Laboratory of General Biology, Division of Microbiology and Biotechnology
Short Description of Scientific Laboratory Division
In the division of Plant Biotechnology the following investigations are carried out in Armenia, particularly at the YSU.
1. Obtaining of isolated tissue cultures of some valuable medical plants and study of their secondary metabolism with the object detecting of substances having antibacterial or antitumor activity (YSU), as well as possible sources of natural dyes (Institute of Botany, NAS, RA).
2. Application of phytostimulators of microbial origin in the agriculture, study of mechanisms of their action.
3. Studying of biodiversity and biotechnological potentional of lactic acid bacteria isolated from dairy produce, sampled in different regions of Armenia. In the domain of microbiology a large work is carried out also on the creation of extremophile microorganism’s collection, isolated from the sites with geochemical and thermal anomalies of Armenia, and the study of their possible role in biotechnological processes.

3. Laboratory of General Biology, Division of Genetics and Cytology
Short Description of Scientific Laboratory Division
In the Group of cytogenetics are realized investigations of genetic activity of biological and technological factors widespread in Armenia. The main outcome of scientific activity of group of cytogenetics are the DNA and chromosome damage estimates in groups of genetic risk in Armenia (Chernobyl accident Armenian liquidators, workers of Armenian nuclear power station, patients with familial Mediterranean fever, leukemia and inborn defects and cancer patients treated with radiotherapy). Chromosomal and point mutations monitoring in plants of polluted areas in Armenia is realized. In the Group is also realized the analysis of mutagenicity of xenobiotics in different districts of Yerevan by application of Tradescantia test-system. The genotoxicity of waters of some rivers in the territory of Yerevan was analyzed with Tradescancia-stamen-hair mutation assay and micronuclei test application. The genotoxicity of heavy metals in model experiments and in samples of waters was revealed. The results obtained confirm the high sensitivity of tests applied and permit to recommend them for the monitoring of waters genotoxicity.

4. Laboratory of General Biology, Division of Human & Animal Physiology after T. Mooshegyan
Short Description of Scientific Laboratory Division
In the present time the research assistants of the Department are studing neurophysiological mechanisms of viscerosomatic functions of organism under vibration and hypoxia». In particular, changes of spontaneous activity of vestibular nuclei (superior, inferior, lateral and medial nuclei), deep cerebellar nuclei (fastigial and interpositar nuclei) and respiratory centre of bulbar parts of brain are studying in conditions of different term of exposure to vibration stimulation and labyrithectomy. The registration and analysis of neuronal activity is conducting by special program elaborated for biological signals, which allows investigate more than ten indices of neuronal activity. Moreover, the examination of neuroprotective role of PRP-1 on neurodegenerative processes induced by labyrithectomy are under investigation.

5. Laboratory of General Biology, Division of Zoology
Short Description of Scientific Laboratory Division
The different mechanisms ecological, ethological and microevolution researches between species of amphibians, reptiles, and small mammalians from sympatric populations in Armenia are studied. Comparative genetic variability of sympatric populations of parthenogenetic and bisexual species of rock lizards and the hybrids formed as a result of their hybridization are conducting, as well as the age of individuals and particularity of their reproduction are carried out.
The morphofunctional particularities changes of a spleen, liver of amphibians from reservoirs of different level of pollution are studying.
