NATO - A RELIABLE PARTNER
NATO - A RELIABLE PARTNER
"Joint projects help everybody to share knowledge and experience".

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Jean Fournet has such an opinion. He was the guest of YSU on the 12th of March. The main goal of the visit, as Alexander Markarov, head of the International Cooperation Administration mentioned, was to provide with detailed information about the structure and mission of NATO.

NATO is a collective organization, alliance, where the decisions are made by consensus. It is not an easy process, as there are 26 member countries, - said Jean Fournet. He also mentioned that NATO is to bring together USA, Canada and Europe. It is a security organization.

According to Mr. Fournet NATO is a body which has political and military structures, but has not assigned troops. In any different case when NATO has got a mission there is decided who can contribute what: human resources or techniques, - mentioned Mr. Fournet.

Every country in the world has got to provide its own security and the security of its citizens. And taking into consideration the universal threats, Jean Fournet thinks that it is right to create coalitions, where the most urgent issues can be discussed and the ways of solution found. To develop more effective partnership one must not be member of NATO. But joint projects can be realized between the countries which share some common interests and values, trust and confidence, says Jean Fournet.

Taking into consideration the threat of the terrorism, the NATO representative states that we need to have a soldier of 21st century. Today the soldier is sent to the battlefield not only to kill but to maintain peace, - he said. Today soldiers can have a mission to help to rebuild a country, and it is too difficult. So, we need some new ways of training people.
