In 1932, YSU's Geography and Geology faculties functioned as part of the History-Economics faculty, and then, from 1934 to 2008, functioned as separate faculties. In 2008 the faculty of Geography and Geology was formed based on the union of the latter.
In the Faculty of Geography and Geology, scientific research works are carried out in the directions of cartography and geodesy, hydrology, nature use, and environmental protection, water problems, the deep structure of the earth's crust, formation of mineral fields, development of their search methods, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geochemistry, landslide phenomena, seismology, geophysical fields.
The faculty operates a three-level system of full-time and part-time education: Undergraduate, Master's, and Postgraduate.
The faculty has professional chairs, educational and scientific laboratories, and a seismic station for recording weak earthquakes, as well as a meteorological station, and a center for sustainable development. In the center of sustainable development, research works are carried out in the directions of landslide phenomena, water resources management, environmental risk assessment of tailings, and mining. Workshops and discussions are organized in faculty, in which representatives of different organizations participate. The results of studies and discussions are presented to the relevant agencies of the RA government.
In the Faculty of Geography and Geology, the training of foreign citizens in English is organized in various specialties in a short-term program (duration: up to one year). The professors of the faculty, as guest specialists, give lectures at universities abroad, undergo training at prestigious international educational and scientific institutions, and are also involved in international research programs and groups. Among other events, the faculty organizes national and international conferences where the issues of geography and geology are raised.
The faculty cooperates with leading scientific and educational institutions abroad, including the universities of Germany, Russia, France, the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan. Thanks to the extensive local and international cooperation, the students of the faculty are given the opportunity to be employed right from their years of study.
The daily life of students in the faculty becomes more attractive due to the activity of student organizations. A large number of students participate in scientific research works carried out in laboratories, chairs, and centers. Students with excellent progress receive nominal scholarships. As part of exchange programs, students have the opportunity to study at prestigious universities abroad.
The students of the faculty undergo training in various enterprises, administrative institutions, Institute of Geodesy, YSU "Byurakan", "Tsaghkadzor" and "Marmarik" training bases, in the State Committee of Cadastre, in the departments of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations, at Yerevan schools, museums, and partner organizations. Students participate in geological expeditions held in different regions of Armenia.
Students have the opportunity to get a pedagogue’s qualification by participating in the courses of the pedagogical block (on a paid basis).
Graduates of the Faculty of Geography and Geology work in various fields, including the faculty's partner company "Geocosmos", the German organization "GIZ", the State Cadastre Committee of the Republic of Armenia, the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Ministries of the Economy and Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia, the Seismic protection territorial survey of Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia, in "Hayantar" SNCO, "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" of the RA ESCS, scientific research and measurement centers, many enterprises of the tourist industry, socio-cultural service provider, geological, mining, communication, retail trade, and etc.
