General information
Armenia hosts 30 bat species, including endangered ones like Rhinolophus mehelyi and Myotis hajastanicus, vital for pest control. Threatened by habitat loss, pesticides, and human disturbance, these species lack comprehensive population data. This project proposes acoustic monitoring, genetic sampling, and citizen science to map distributions, identify key habitats, and assess threats. The maternity/nursery and wintering colonies of bats will be studied and recorded. Outcomes include updated conservation strategies and policy recommendations, supporting Armenia’s commitments to international biodiversity agreements (Bern Convention, EUROBATS). The initiative combines scientific rigor with public engagement to ensure long-term bat conservation.
