From research idea to startup: YSU launches new program
Yerevan State University is taking another step toward turning scientific research findings into practical solutions and economic value. The YSU Innovate Fellowship Program, a new initiative of the university's Business Incubator, lays the groundwork for providing targeted support to researchers for the first time at YSU, helping them assess the practical and commercial potential of their research, explore opportunities to bring their findings to market and establish research-based companies. The program is designed to translate research findings into practical solutions and strengthen ties between university research and entrepreneurship.
How can research findings be transformed into practical technologies, and how can a researcher become the founder of a research-based company? This is the question on the focus of the YSU Business Incubator's eight-month program, scheduled to launch in November 2026.
The initiative focuses on building new connections between university research and entrepreneurship. It aims to help researchers assess the practical and commercial potential of their work, explore possible routes to market and lay the groundwork for establishing research-based companies.
What is university spin-off, and why does it matter?
A university research-based company, commonly known as a spin-off, is established to put knowledge, research findings or technologies developed at a university into practical use and bring them to market.
Such companies can turn research developments into new products, technological solutions or services, connecting universities with the needs of the economy and society.
This model is an important mechanism for putting research findings to practical use at many research universities worldwide. It not only promotes innovative entrepreneurship but also enables universities to expand cooperation with the private sector, attract investment and create new opportunities for research development.
The introduction of a targeted program at YSU is particularly important because it approaches the commercialization of university research not as an individual researcher's undertaking but as a process requiring coordinated support.
From research idea to market: how the program will support participants
The program is intended for doctoral students in the final stages of their studies and researchers who have earned a PhD within the past three years, whose research has potential for practical application and commercialization.
It is open to researchers from a wide range of disciplines, from artificial intelligence and engineering to natural sciences, biotechnology and social innovation.
During the eight-month program, participants will work with mentors, explore potential applications for their research and assess market demand, develop business models and work on product development. This process will help them understand what problems their research addresses, who could benefit from it and whether there is demand for it in the market.
A key feature of the program is its focus not simply on innovative ideas but on commercializing research findings. Participants will work to assess the practical potential of their research and identify opportunities to bring it to market.
New direction for university development
The YSU Innovate Fellowship Program builds on the university's efforts to develop an environment that supports innovation and entrepreneurship. While previous Business Incubator initiatives have supported the development of student ideas and startup projects, the new program focuses more specifically on the commercialization of research findings.
Through this approach, YSU aims to strengthen its role not only as an institution that provides education and generates knowledge but also as a place where new technologies and research-based entrepreneurship can develop.
Successful implementation of the program could lay the groundwork for establishing YSU's first university spin-off companies and open up new opportunities for cooperation between research and industry.
New partnership opportunities
The program is also open to collaboration with the business community, technology companies, investors and other interested organizations.
Partners can contribute to the development of research-based ideas by providing professional advice, mentoring, technological and business expertise, as well as supporting the financing and market entry of promising projects.
YSU places particular importance on building long-term cooperation between the academic and business communities, aiming to create an environment where university research can lead to practical solutions and scientific ideas can develop into new companies.
YSU invites interested organizations and individuals to join the initiative and contribute to the development of university-based, research-driven entrepreneurship in Armenia.
