YSU joins international project to advance AI research
The WARIE international project, implemented under the European Union's Horizon Europe program, has been launched in Yerevan. It aims to strengthen research capabilities in artificial intelligence across Eastern Partnership countries and expand international cooperation. Yerevan State University (YSU), a partner in the project, will contribute to joint research and efforts to strengthen scientific ties.
Yerevan is hosting the kickoff workshop and official launch event for the WARIE (Widening AI Research and Innovation for Excellence in the Eastern Partnership) project on October 21-22.
Funded under the European Union's Horizon Europe program, WARIE aims to strengthen research and innovation capabilities in Eastern Partnership countries by advancing scientific excellence in AI, enhancing researchers' skills and expanding international cooperation.
The project is coordinated by the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems (IIAP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. YSU is participating as a project partner, contributing its research capabilities and expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning and applied mathematics.
The kickoff workshop was held at IIAP on October 21. Partner institutions presented their research capabilities, planned roles and responsibilities within the project, and expected contributions. Discussions also covered the objectives of the work packages, implementation methodologies, expected results and timelines.
The workshop agenda included quality and data management, ethics, communication, dissemination of results and project sustainability. On the second day, the Management Committee met to discuss project management documents, the first-year work plan and key aspects of cooperation among partners.
On October 22, the official launch ceremony for the WARIE project was held at the Holiday Inn Yerevan hotel. The event was attended by Armenia's Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, Georgian Ambassador to Armenia George Sharvashidze, and YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.
Professor Hrachya Astsatryan, WARIE Project Coordinator, then presented the project's vision, objectives, expected impact and alignment with the Horizon Europe program's priorities for strengthening research capabilities.
WARIE brings together universities and research organizations from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Germany, France, Switzerland and Sweden. The partnership aims to strengthen international scientific ties, develop the professional skills of early-career researchers, and promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence and the principles of open science.
YSU's participation in the project will create new opportunities to strengthen research capabilities, expand its involvement in international research networks and conduct joint research in artificial intelligence.
The project began on October 1, 2026, and is scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2030.
