Young Geologist School launched at YSU
The launch of the Young Geologist School was announced at the YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology. The school has been established within the framework of cooperation between the Faculty of Geography and Geology and Kapan Mining and Processing Plant, with the objective of deepening the knowledge of 9th–12th-grade students in geology.
The Young Geologist School will support students in choosing a profession and developing research-oriented thinking. Through the courses, young geologists will explore the laws of nature, study the surrounding environment, learn about geological phenomena and natural disasters (earthquakes, landslides, collapses, etc.), become familiar with the types of mineral resources found in Armenia, examine collected samples under microscopes, and participate in professional field trips outside Yerevan.
Irina Sahakyan, lecturer in the Chair of Services at the Faculty of Geography and Geology, expressed hope that many of the students will continue their studies at the Faculty of Geography and Geology.
"Today, at our first meeting, our goal is to introduce you to the opportunities offered by the faculty and the school's program. We will show you the environment where students are trained to become skilled professionals and serve their country," she said in her address to the students.
Papin Muradyan, Program Coordinator at the faculty's Center for Sustainable Development, presented the Young Geologist School's three-month program, emphasizing that the instructors are among the best specialists in the field, including candidates of science and associate professors.
"After a long hiatus, the Young Geologist School is reopening in Armenia, and you are part of the first group of participants. Upon completing the program, you will become the first graduates of the school. The goal of the Young Geologist School is to provide 9th–12th-grade students with knowledge in geology, introduce the laws of nature through accessible scientific lectures, and offer an overview of the profession. In other words, this program will serve as career guidance for you," Muradyan said, noting that youth geology clubs had operated in Armenia since 1939 and became especially active after 1948.
"Imagine—students like you, accompanied by lecturers and teachers, have traveled to countries of the former Soviet Union—Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine—to participate in olympiads. We aim to expand these opportunities in the future so that you can take part in such competitions as well," he added.
After familiarizing themselves with the program, the students toured the Faculty of Geography and Geology and tested the modern equipment available.
The Young Geologist School has 32 students, seven of whom will attend theoretical courses remotely from the training center at the Kapan Mining and Processing Plant, joining the other students for practical field trips.
According to Papin Muradyan, the Faculty of Geography and Geology emphasizes the inclusion of students from all provinces of Armenia who are interested in geology. In this regard, summer camps will also be organized in provinces where mining companies operate.
