About the Programme
The Jean Monnet programme is an integral part of the Erasmus+ programme. It was established to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union (EU) studies worldwide. The programme also fosters dialogue between the academic community and policymakers.
The Jean Monnet programme was launched in 1989. Today, it is implemented in more than 1,000 universities across 86 countries worldwide. According to official data, 4,730 projects have received support under Jean Monnet actions.
Teaching and Research Activities
Jean Monnet Modules
Short-term courses dedicated to the study of the European Union (EU). Each module includes a minimum of 40 teaching hours per academic year.
Jean Monnet Chairs
Each Chair is held by a single professor who is required to deliver at least 90 teaching hours per academic year.
Jean Monnet Centers of Excellence
These are hubs for the concentration of knowledge and expertise on EU-related topics. Academic responsibility for a Center lies with the professor holding a Jean Monnet Chair. Centers of Excellence bring together highly qualified experts (including Jean Monnet Chair holders and module coordinators) to promote interdisciplinary cooperation, develop joint international initiatives, and build structured links with academic institutions in other countries. They also significantly contribute to raising awareness of EU-related issues among students of non-specialized faculties, civil servants, civil society actors, and the public.
Support to Associations
Jean Monnet supports organizations that promote education and training on EU-related topics at the Master’s level and beyond. Associations that contribute to the study of the EU integration process are also eligible for support. These organizations must be interdisciplinary in nature and open to all interested professionals—lecturers, researchers, and practitioners. Such associations must be officially registered and have an independent legal status.
Jean Monnet Networks
The aim is to encourage the creation and development of international consortia (universities, centers of excellence, chairs, research teams, and individual experts) in the field of EU studies. This action supports the collection of information, the exchange of best practices, the creation of knowledge, and the promotion of European integration worldwide. It may also support the expansion of existing networks, particularly by encouraging the involvement of early-career researchers in EU-related topics.
Jean Monnet Projects
These aim to support innovation, the integration of different fields, and the dissemination of EU-related content. Projects are submitted as single-institution initiatives but may include partners. Their duration may range from 12 to 24 months.
