Chair of Applied Sociology
The Chair of Applied Sociology was established in 1986 by Professor Lyudmila Harutyunyan, based on the Laboratory of Sociological Research at Yerevan State University, which had been operating since 1980. It was among the first academic units to apply modern approaches and methods in the study of society, laying the foundation for the incorporation of global sociological thought and the development of a national sociological school.
In 2004, within the Faculty of Philosophy, Sociology, and Psychology, the Chair of Social Work and Social Technologies was separated from the Chair of Applied Sociology. Based on these two chairs, the Faculty of Sociology was established as an independent unit at Yerevan State University on September 1, 2004. Subsequently, the Chair of Applied Sociology began operating within the Faculty of Sociology.
The chair offers both bachelor's and master's programs, training students in the methodology of sociological research, conflict studies, social security, and migration policy.
The academic staff conduct a wide range of research in political, economic, military, communication, and media sociology, as well as in issues related to security, gender, and migration.
The chair actively cooperates with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, the State Migration Service of the Ministry of Territorial Administration, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the OSCE Office in Yerevan, the Caucasus Research Resource Center (CRRC), and several other national and international organizations.
The Chair of Applied Sociology is headed by Professor Artur Atanesyan, Doctor of Political Science.
