On October 6, the YSU Chair of Armenian Literature and Literary Theory held a seminar and discussion titled Philological Readings. The guest speaker was Siranush Parsadanyan, a researcher at the M. Abeghyan Institute of Literature. Introducing the speaker, Head of the Chair N. Vardanyan noted that Parsadanyan had begun her academic career at the Faculty of Armenian Philology.
The lecture, titled "From Travel Notes to Historical Documentation: The Armenian People and German Travel Accounts," examined accounts by German and Austrian travelers and researchers who had visited Armenian communities at different periods. These accounts are valuable sources for exploring various aspects of Armenian studies.
Parsadanyan focused on the travel accounts of Hermann Abich, Friedrich Bodenstedt, Moritz Wagner and August von Haxthausen, examining the Armenian legends preserved in their writings and their descriptions of cultural and ethnographic life.
Another major focus of the lecture was Khachatur Abovyan, the prominent Armenian writer, educator and intellectual. As an educated and enlightened figure of his time, Abovyan accompanied European travelers and researchers and served as their interpreter.
The lecture highlighted the importance of these travel accounts as valuable primary sources for studying Armenian history, geographical place names and culture.
Faculty members and students attending the seminar actively participated in the discussion, raising questions and offering suggestions that pointed to several new and important directions for research into German travel accounts.
