General information
This research project aims for the first time to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive description of the Armenian vocabulary related to the semantic domains of physical world (landscape, animals, plants, etc.) and culture (craft, folk beliefs, etc.) throughout the whole chronological span of the Armenian language from its Indo-European roots in ca. 4th millennium BCE up to modern dialects, in the context of the Armenian Highlands. There are two major shortcomings in the field of the Armenian language and culture: 1. Regardless of the existence of a huge corpus of synchronic dialectological descriptions, there are no fundamental historicaldiachronic examinations of the vocabulary of all the dialectal areas organized in various semantic groups. 2. There are no fundamental lingo-cultural studies. The most effective way of historical examinations of the whole material and cultural world of Armenians is the multidisciplinary approach, centered at the historical-comparative linguistic methods and systematically combined with archaeological and ethnographic data. The research will result in a voluminous work on the history of the language, culture, and land of Armenians, starting with the Indo-European roots and proceeding throughout the following millennia.
