New horizons for scientific cooperation in nuclear research

Grigory Trubnikov, Director of JINR, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, along with other foreign scientists, visited Yerevan State University to discuss prospects for expanding cooperation.

The activities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research primarily cover elementary particle physics and information technology. Armenian scientific and educational institutions, including YSU, are expanding cooperation to include biology, chemical physics, materials science and other fields.

The event began with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between YSU and JINR, with a view to strengthening and expanding bilateral ties, conducting joint research and implementing mobility programs for scientists and students.  

YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan and JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov emphasized the importance of further developing the partnership, exchanging expertise and cooperating in training a new generation of specialists.

Expanded cooperation will enable Armenian scientific organizations to conduct more joint research and involve young scientists in these projects. For JINR, the cooperation will help strengthen ties with scientific organizations and develop new partnerships.

As part of Dubna Days in Armenia, YSU Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs Rafayel Barkhudaryan delivered a presentation on YSU's activities, structural units, scientific achievements in recent years and the modernization of its infrastructure. In particular, he highlighted the growth in the number of publications by YSU researchers indexed in the international Scopus database, as well as the capabilities of the new supercomputer at the YSU Data Processing Center, which includes 72 NVIDIA H100 graphics processing units.

Dmitry Kamanin, Director of the JINR University Centre, then presented the educational and scientific potential of the international intergovernmental research organization. According to him, bachelor's and master's students from JINR member states can join various research groups in the institute's laboratories, working in physics, engineering, computer science and other fields. JINR also gives students from member states the opportunity to prepare their bachelor's, master's and doctoral theses in the institute's laboratories. 

As part of previous JINR events in Armenia, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Information Center was established at the YSU Institute of Physics. The center was created through cooperation among Yerevan State University, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and the A. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory, with the aim of expanding and strengthening partnerships in research and science communication. The center is headed by YSU researcher Susanna Gaginyan.
