Optics and Photonics Center opens at YSU: Prime minister introduced to ongoing scientific research

The opening ceremony of the newly established Optics and Photonics Center at YSU Institute of Physics took place with the participation of Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. The event was also attended by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Deputy Chairman of the Higher Education and Science Committee Artur Movsisyan, the university’s leadership, as well as staff members of the institute and the new center. During the visit, the prime minister toured several of YSU’s leading scientific laboratories, learning more about ongoing research projects, technological capacities, and established infrastructure.

The newly established Optics and Photonics Center at YSU Institute of Physics is envisioned as a major hub for scientific research and technological innovation, bringing together state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, leading researchers, and students.

The establishment of the center has been made possible through co-financing by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the Competitive Innovation Fund (CIF), and Yerevan State University. This initiative reflects the state-level prioritization of scientific development and the continuous expansion of opportunities within the academic sector

Following the opening ceremony, the delegation led by the prime minister, accompanied by YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, toured the laboratories of the center. The guests were introduced to the center’s technical capabilities and research focus areas, which include ultrafast optics, photonics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and other relevant scientific fields.

The delegation then visited Memorial Park, built with the support of Amaryan Charitable Foundation, to pay tribute and lay flowers in honor of the heroes who fell during the 44-day war.

Continuing the visit, the delegation also toured the university’s Faculty of Biology, where they were introduced to the research activities conducted in the faculty’s laboratories.

The visit concluded with a meeting between the prime minister and members of the university community, including faculty and students. During the discussion, the prime minister answered questions raised by the attendees.
