Los Angeles Times on Armenia’s scientific, educational & technological potential - with a special focus on YSU
Los Angeles Times has published a special report titled “Armenia Special Report,” presenting Armenia’s current stage of economic, technological, and investment development. As part of the report, an interview with Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, Rector of Yerevan State University, was also published, highlighting the University’s role in advancing the country’s scientific-educational agenda and innovation-driven progress.
In an interview featured in the "Armenia Special Report", Hovhannes Hovhannisyan emphasizes that Yerevan State University is not only educational but also a powerful research institution, comprising 21 faculties and nine research institutes. The university leads Armenia in the number of internationally peer-reviewed scientific publications.
In recent years, through substantial state investment, YSU's research infrastructure has undergone significant modernization. A cornerstone of these advancements has been the establishment of the AI center at YSU.
The rector noted that this center, which opened in December, is the largest of its kind in Armenia. He highlighted that its supercomputer—composed of GPUs valued at approximately $8 million—is among the most powerful in the region.
According to Rector Hovhannisyan, the university's development is grounded in core values such as responsibility, transparency, accountability, academic freedom, and innovation. Academic curricula are regularly reviewed and updated to align with the labor market demands.
"Science should not be isolated; it must be part of the world," the rector stressed, underscoring that YSU cooperates with scientific and educational institutions in more than 50 countries.
These initiatives demonstrate that YSU continues to strengthen its role as the primary catalyst for Armenia's scientific, educational, and technological advancement.
