Prospects for Armenian–Swiss academic cooperation discussed at YSU
The Rector of Yerevan State University, Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, hosted Andrea Barbara Baumann, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Armenia, to discuss expanding international academic partnerships. During the meeting, both parties explored prospects for advancing collaboration in education and research, underscoring the importance of strengthening institutional ties between universities.
During the meeting, Rector Hovhannisyan outlined the university's strategic development priorities. He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at elevating educational quality and expanding research capacity, alongside infrastructure modernization and a significant increase in international scientific publications. Furthermore, he emphasized YSU's active engagement in international—particularly exchange—programs, noting that these efforts are geared toward bolstering the university’s global competitiveness and fostering closer cooperation with international partners.
The rector further noted that in recent years, YSU's laboratories have been modernized and equipped in line with European standards. He specifically pointed to the installation of the region's largest supercomputer, which allows researchers to work under advanced, state-of-the-art conditions.
"YSU is actively engaged in Erasmus+ programs, providing both students and faculty with the chance to participate in international exchanges, broaden their knowledge, and acquire new skills and experience," said Hovhannisyan. He added that the university continuously undertakes the accreditation of its educational programs through European agencies to maintain and enhance their international quality.
Alexander Markarov, Head of the YSU International Cooperation Office, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and provided an overview of the long-standing history and strategic significance of YSU's collaboration with Swiss universities.
Ambassador Andrea Barbara Baumann reaffirmed the importance of academic mobility, noting that student and faculty exchanges play a pivotal role in the sharing of knowledge and experience. She particularly highlighted the role of Armenia—and specifically YSU—as a regional hub for education and research.
"One of the cornerstones of our educational policy is the promotion of student and faculty mobility. The effectiveness of education depends significantly on the ability of individuals to move freely and build cross-border collaborations," the ambassador stated.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their mutual interest and commitment to sustaining a constructive dialogue, aimed at further advancing bilateral cooperation in the fields of education and science.
