YSU delegation attends events commemorating 70th anniversary of Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna
Yerevan State University Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan and Head of Staff Davit Hovhannisyan participated in the events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna. Founded on March 26, 1956, the institute continues to maintain its pivotal role in nuclear and high-energy physics, serving as one of the world's preeminent centers for international scientific cooperation.
As part of the jubilee celebrations, several meetings were held to review current areas of bilateral cooperation and discuss opportunities for deepening ties through new initiatives and frameworks.
Furthermore, the YSU delegation explored the institute's state-of-the-art research and infrastructural capabilities, including a visit to the NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) center. NICA is a next-generation accelerator complex currently under construction in Dubna, designed to study the properties of dense baryonic matter. It provides scientists with the opportunity to research states of matter characteristic of the early stages of the universe, including quark-gluon plasma.
During the anniversary events, the delegation also met with world-renowned scientist YSU Honorary Professor Yuri Oganessian. His scientific legacy and contributions have long held a distinguished place in both global science and the history of Yerevan State University.
The multifaceted collaboration between the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Yerevan State University is characterized by its long-standing and continuous nature. Armenia's involvement in the institute's activities spans several decades; Soviet Armenia was a member from the Institute's inception in 1956, and since 1992, the country has maintained its membership as a sovereign state.
Within this cooperative framework, YSU research groups are integrated into several of the institute's major projects. University researchers and young scientists regularly participate in international conferences, summer schools, and professional programs, expanding their expertise within the global scientific community.
A key platform for this partnership is the JINR Information Center at YSU, established through a collaboration between JINR, Yerevan State University, and the A.I. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory. The center's activities are aimed at expanding and strengthening partnerships in research, professional training, and the popularization of science.
The YSU delegation's participation in the 70th-anniversary celebrations underscores the university's active engagement with international scientific platforms. It reaffirms YSU's commitment to continuously deepening its partnership with the institute for the advancement of education, science, and the professional development of young researchers.
