"International experience played a major role in this achievement": YSU student to continue studies at a world-leading university
Yerevan State University continues to expand international academic opportunities for its students, as reflected in their growing success on the global stage. This time, we spoke with Ofelia Mkrtchyan, a student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, who, after studying in Germany through the Erasmus+ exchange program, is preparing to pursue a master's degree at one of the world's leading universities in China.
– As a YSU student, you had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program. Which university did you attend, and what was your area of study?
– Within the framework of the Erasmus+ exchange program, I spent one semester studying at Aalen University in Germany. My coursework focused primarily on data science, programming, and mathematics. The experience allowed me not only to acquire new knowledge but also to gain firsthand insight into Germany's education system and develop within an international academic environment.
– What specific professional skills did you gain, and what types of activities did you participate in?
– The courses I completed significantly deepened my knowledge of data science, machine learning, and programming. In particular, I studied neural networks and modern methods of data analysis. In addition to theoretical coursework, I actively participated in team projects, academic events, and international student gatherings, all of which contributed substantially to both my professional and personal development.
– You have recently defended your graduation thesis in Applied Statistics and Data Science. Could you tell us more about your research interests?
– Yes, I recently successfully defended my thesis, which focused on the application of the obstacle problem in financial mathematics models. I am particularly interested in data science, machine learning, and mathematical modeling. I have always been fascinated by the idea of solving real-world applied problems by combining precise mathematical calculations with technological methods.
– In your view, what was the key to your success in studying abroad—your strong academic performance or other factors?
– I believe it was a combination of both. On the one hand, my strong academic performance was certainly important; on the other, I had a strong desire to gain new knowledge and international experience. I have always wanted to challenge myself in a multicultural environment and explore new opportunities in global education.
– Comparing the educational environments at YSU and Aalen University, what differences stand out most? What changes would you like to see at your home university?
– Both universities have their strengths. In Germany, there was a stronger emphasis on practical work, team projects, and active student participation in classes. In addition, the academic schedule was more flexible: attendance was not mandatory, there were no midterm examinations, and assessment was based on a single final exam, which students could prepare for independently at home.
I would like to see a greater emphasis on practical projects at YSU as well.
– Did you notice differences in student-faculty relations?
– In Germany, professors strongly encourage open and direct communication. They place great importance on students asking questions, participating in discussions, and demonstrating independent thinking. We also have highly qualified and supportive professors at YSU, but the practical approach was more evident abroad, creating a more interactive learning environment.
– A multicultural environment brings new connections. Which nationalities did you befriend, and did you introduce them to Armenian culture?
– I interacted with students from many different countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, and others. One of the greatest advantages of such an environment is that it broadens your worldview, teaches respect for other cultures, and develops the ability to collaborate flexibly. Of course, linguistic and cultural differences occasionally created minor challenges, but those experiences were valuable lessons as well.
As for Armenian culture, I never missed an opportunity to proudly introduce my international friends to our history, culture, and traditions.
– Alongside your studies, you also managed to travel extensively. Which cities and countries did you visit?
– Yes, we had special travel passes that allowed unlimited use of trains and buses. I visited several German cities, including Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt, and Heidelberg. I also traveled to France (Strasbourg), the Czech Republic (Prague), Italy (Venice and Milan), and Greece. Sometimes I traveled with friends, and at other times on my own.
– Where do you plan to apply the experience and knowledge you have gained, and what goals have you set for the future?
– I hope to apply the knowledge I have acquired in the fields of data science and machine learning by working for leading technology companies.
My most immediate and important goal has already become a reality. Beginning this September, I will continue my studies in the master's program in the same field at Tsinghua University in China, one of the world's most prestigious universities. The international experience and confidence I gained through Erasmus+ played a major role in this achievement.
