From May 3 to 7, Professor Roberto Nicolini delivered a series of lectures at the Faculty of European Languages and Communication, Yerevan State University.
Roberto Nicolini teaches German language, linguistics, and translation at Campus CIELS in Brescia, as well as at the University of Milan and the University of Bergamo in Lombardy. He also works as a professional translator from German, English, and French into Italian.
Within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, the visiting professor delivered lectures for bachelor's students of the "English, German and Communication" program at the YSU Faculty of European Languages and Communication, specializing in translation and interpretation.
The lectures addressed one of the most sensitive and topical issues in contemporary German linguistics: gender. The topic, which has long moved beyond public discourse, has increasingly become an important component of linguistic and translation studies. Presenting contemporary theoretical approaches to gender relations in German, Nicolini discussed strategies for neutralizing and emphasizing gendered forms in different types of texts, their usage specifics, as well as translation mechanisms and possible reformulations. The challenges of transferring gendered forms in translation and possible solutions were also examined.
The professor also delivered a lecture for the academic staff of the YSU Chairs of German Philology, and Translation Theory and Practice, focusing on the possibilities and challenges of modern translation. Special attention was given to creative translation solutions and issues related to editing machine-translated texts produced by artificial intelligence. Practical approaches and methods were presented that may be effectively applied in professional translation practice.
