Chair of Media Studies and Semiotics
The Department of Media Studies and Semiotics has gone through a characteristic path of institutional development. The Department of Radio and Television Journalism was established in May 1999, and the Department of Print and Broadcast Media in 2017. By decision of the YSU Board of Trustees, these areas have been merged and reorganized into the Department of Media Studies and Semiotics since September 2025. The new cathedral platform operates in accordance with modern standards for educational and research activities, responding to the challenges posed by the rapidly developing media sphere and relevant areas of semiotic science.
The Department's professors employ modern methodologies for analyzing media processes: the theory of the sign, theories of discourse, visual and cultural semiotics, and relevant tools for studying mass media.
The key task of the Department is to provide high–quality training for specialists in media research and to form a professional community of researchers who possess the latest methods and can conduct competitive research at an international level.
The Department maintains active relations with relevant faculties, centers, leading world centers of semiotics, and, in particular, with the World Association of Semiotic Research (IASS–AIS) and the Asian International Association of Semiotics (ASIA). Regular meetings and lectures are held with leading researchers in media and semiotics. The Department is also engaged in developing an interdisciplinary master's degree program and, together with foreign partners, is working on a dual educational program (Double Diploma/Dual Degree).
