On November 20 of this year, the Faculty of Law at Yerevan State University organized an online lecture for students.
The lecture was held on the initiative of Professor Armen Haykyants, Head of the Chair of Civil Law at the Faculty of Law, and was delivered by Mariam Ayvazyan, lecturer at the Chair of Civil Law, who currently works at the Geneva office of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Organized within the framework of the university course "Private International Law", the session aimed to deepen students' knowledge of the international system of intellectual property law and to familiarize them with the principles underpinning the contemporary global mechanisms for the protection of intellectual property.
Mariam Ayvazyan presented the historical development of international intellectual property protection, tracing its evolution from the early stages to the advanced mechanisms in place today. Highlighting the key international organizations in the field, she discussed the content and significance of major international treaties, including the Berne and Paris Conventions, the TRIPS Agreement, and WIPO's foundational instruments. She also outlined the tools through which states and international bodies currently ensure global protection of copyrights, industrial property, inventions, and innovative technologies.
She further emphasized the practical application of intellectual property law, addressing contemporary challenges, global issues, the protection of creative works in the information technology era, and emerging trends ranging from artificial intelligence to the global circulation of digital content.
During the interactive discussion, students had the opportunity to receive answers to a wide range of questions on the topic.
The lecture provided an important platform for students to understand how intellectual property law operates at the international level, its interconnections with national legislation, and how the field is evolving in the technological era.
Events of this kind enable future legal professionals to acquire the knowledge and perspective necessary to navigate the modern legal landscape effectively.
