Mexican ambassador Eduardo Villegas Megías visits YSU
At the initiative of the YSU International Cooperation Office, the university hosted a meeting with Eduardo Villegas Megías, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Mexican States to the Republic of Armenia (based in Moscow). The event also featured the opening of the exhibition "Mexico: People, Soul and Traditions" and the presentation of the ambassador's book, "History of the Mexican People."
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan praised efforts to strengthen Armenian-Mexican cultural and academic ties. The rector and the ambassador expressed hope that the cooperation will help strengthen interuniversity relations and promote academic exchanges.
Exhibition dedicated to Mexico
The opening ceremony of the exhibition "Mexico: People, Soul and Traditions" took place in the lobby of the YSU Sargis and Mary Izmirlian Library. More than 30 photographs taken from the air and on the ground by 16 women showcased the colorful worldview and joie de vivre characteristic of the Mexican people, as well as the country's vibrant colors. The photographs reflected Mexico's rich heritage and contemporary society, highlighting a culture with a history spanning millennia, along with its traditions, beliefs and celebrations. Andrea Lorelain served as the project's artistic curator and international coordinator.
Book presentation
Following the exhibition opening, the ambassador's book "History of the Mexican People" was presented in the YSU Academic Council Session Hall.
Discussing Mexico's formation and key stages of its historical development, the ambassador spoke about ancient civilizations that flourished in what is now Mexico, including the Maya and Aztecs. He also presented the country's cultural heritage, from folk beliefs and customs to cuisine, music and architecture. He emphasized the influence of Indigenous, European and African cultures on the development of Mexico's cultural diversity.
At the end of the meeting, YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan presented the Mexican ambassador with a silver commemorative coin issued to mark the university's 100th anniversary, as a gesture of bilateral friendship, respect and fruitful cooperation.
The event was attended by representatives of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, Nikolay Kostandyan, Honorary Consul of the United Mexican States in the Republic of Armenia, students from the Chair of Romance Philology at the YSU Faculty of European Languages and Communication, and other guests.
