YSU rector receives delegation of Iraqi Embassy to discuss new opportunities for scientific and educational cooperation
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan received Mohammad Omar Al Shaikhly, Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Armenia. During the meeting, prospects for strengthening scientific and educational ties between the two countries were discussed, and potential joint projects aimed at developing education, scientific research, and advanced technologies were outlined.

Hovhannes Hovhannisyan emphasized that Yerevan State University, as Armenia’s leading higher education institution, specializes in nearly all disciplines, and that YSU researchers have recently achieved remarkable success in the area of artificial intelligence.
"The most competent AI team that is scientifically working with data is at YSU. It can be stated with confidence that YSU is on course to become one of the region's leading centers for artificial intelligence, data analysis, and data processing," he said, highlighting the broad opportunities for international collaboration.
In addition, the rector noted that YSU ranks first in Armenia by the number of articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, and that the number of publications by university scholars continues to grow every year.
Mohammad Omar Al Shaikhly, Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Armenia, stated that a new partnership is emerging between the higher education institutions of Armenia and Iraq, centered on advancing education, scientific research, and modern technologies.
In this context, he mentioned the "Study in Iraq" educational program, which offers Armenian students specializing in Arabic studies the opportunity to continue their education in Iraq free of charge, earning master’s and PhD degrees. The program is intended for graduates of Armenian universities who have completed a bachelor’s degree in Arabic studies.
"Several educational institutions have recently opened in Iraq, where education is focused on artificial intelligence. I believe this field is attracting the attention of the majority of students," he noted.
Both parties expressed hope that the current cooperation will expand to include a range of activities, from organizing conferences to joint publications.
