Memorandum signed at YSU to promote development of state language policy
A memorandum of cooperation was signed at Yerevan State University between the university and the RA MoESCS Language Committee. The memorandum aims to enhance academic and educational levels, strengthen collaborative ties, and support the development and implementation of a unified state language policy. Within the framework of this cooperation, various programs and initiatives are planned, including targeted projects aimed at promoting the vitality of the Armenian language.
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan emphasized the importance of signing the memorandum, highlighting that language policy and initiatives aimed at preserving and developing the Armenian language are a priority for YSU. According to him, as the alma mater in the country, Yerevan State University bears a particular responsibility in maintaining the purity and integrity of the language.
"Armenian is not only a means of communication but also one of the fundamental pillars of our identity, culture, and statehood. In this regard, YSU cannot remain detached from processes related to the language and must always be an active participant in the development and implementation of these policies," he stated.
Rector Hovhannisyan noted that, in the modern world, linguistic challenges are diverse, and addressing them requires systematic and consistent collaboration among scientific, educational, and governmental institutions.
"The world is rapidly changing, technologies are developing, and modes of communication are evolving. We are obliged to ensure, in step with these changes, the natural development and vitality of the Armenian language," he emphasized.
The rector added that Yerevan State University is ready to support language policy initiatives with its scientific, professional, and human resources, across research, educational programs, and public awareness activities. In this context, he noted, "As representatives of a leading academic institution, we are aware of our responsibility. I am confident that this memorandum will open up new opportunities for effective and long-term cooperation."
Siranush Dvoyan, Chairperson of the Language Committee, emphasized that the memorandum is a particularly important document for the committee, and its signing coincided with the presentation of the concept of the state language policy in Yerevan State University. She noted that collaborative work with the university had already been carried out before the development and discussion of the concept, which is of significant importance.
Dvoyan stressed that YSU, as the largest academic institution in Armenia, possesses considerable potential to play a decisive role in implementing the state language policy.
"State language policy is carried out not only by governmental institutions but also with the active involvement and central role of scientific and educational institutions," she noted.
According to Dvoyan, for the first time, the concept of the state language policy clearly outlines the main directions of the policy within social, cultural, political, and economic contexts. The next phase of the concept involves the development of programs, which requires collaborative work among various institutions and professional circles.
She presented the main provisions and key sections of the concept, followed by an active discussion with university representatives addressing various sector-related questions.
YSU Academic Secretary, Meri Hovhannisyan, underlined the significance of signing the memorandum, noting that it can significantly promote further cooperation in the development of language technologies, linguistic advisory and reporting services, and the training of specialists in language policy.
Among the attendees were representatives of YSU management, academic staff, researchers, and students.
