Language as bridge between cultures: YSU student shares her experience studying abroad
Milena Ghandilyan, a student at the Faculty of Russian Philology, studied at Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, for one semester through the Erasmus+ program. At this university, she took courses in Intercultural Communication, Translation Theory, Russian Literature, and others, while also advancing her proficiency in both Czech and English.
At Palacký University, Milena studied Russian literature from the perspective of European lecturers with great interest, which allowed her to approach the same material with new interpretations and a comparative perspective. Her academic life abroad was also enriched by seminars and cultural events.
"During my time studying in the Czech Republic, I participated in group discussions and explored the practices of European universities and the organization of education. Within the scope of the courses I took, I gained knowledge not only in my field of specialization but also regarding the European educational system, intercultural communication, and academic mobility," she noted.
Milena is currently in her fourth year, and her graduation thesis focuses on the study of the Russian language.
"My interests include language teaching, communicative approaches, and the use of language in contemporary media," she said, adding that alongside her studies, she runs a blog about the Russian language, sharing various linguistic materials for foreigners. "I am interested in this topic because language is not just an academic subject for me—it's also a way to communicate and connect cultures."
Studying abroad had long been one of Milena's dreams, which was realized thanks to the Faculty of Russian Philology.
"The faculty has played a significant role in the realization of my dream and in the success of my studies. The foundational knowledge I gained at Yerevan State University contributed greatly to my academic achievements abroad," Milena emphasized.
Speaking about the teaching approaches at Palacký University, the YSU student noted: "Lecturers there were friendly and supportive, encouraging students to participate actively and express their opinions freely. The lecturers at YSU are also highly experienced and professional. At both universities, the responsible attitude of lecturers toward the students’ educational process is clearly evident."
During her studies in a multicultural environment, Milena developed her communication skills and introduced representatives of various nationalities to Armenian culture and traditions.
Milena intends to apply the knowledge she gained abroad in the fields of education and linguistics, contributing to the development of international cooperation and intercultural communication. She aims to work in education or international programs, combining professional development with the deepening of cultural ties.
It is worth underscoring that this is the first time students from the YSU Faculty of Russian Philology have had the opportunity to continue their studies abroad under the Erasmus+ program.
