"To meet labor market demands, it is crucial to work on real-world projects at the university": YSU student shares international experience
Anushik Muradyan is a student in the "Service" educational program at the Faculty of Geography and Geology at Yerevan State University. Through the Erasmus+ program, she spent a semester studying abroad at Varna University of Management, where she experienced a multicultural learning environment, expanded her professional knowledge, and gained valuable practical experience—something she describes as a significant investment in her future career.
"During my studies, I explored a range of professional subjects, including the fundamentals of developing marketing strategies and market analysis, tourism management and the organization of tourism services, brand creation and brand management principles, as well as consumer and client behavior in the services sector," Anushik says.
She emphasizes that the courses were designed not only to provide theoretical knowledge but also to allow students to apply it through practical assignments and team projects. "This experience greatly enhanced my professional thinking and helped me understand the nuances of international markets," she adds.
Anushik worked on real business case studies, analyzing the operations of various tourism companies and hotels, and discussing their marketing approaches and customer service strategies. During project discussions, students shared experiences from their own countries, highlighting the unique characteristics of different markets.
"This approach allowed us not only to deepen our theoretical knowledge but also to develop analytical thinking, teamwork skills, and the ability to present academic topics effectively," she says.
According to Anushik, her decision to study abroad was driven primarily by the desire to gain international experience and to experience a different educational system.
"For me, the opportunity to study in a multicultural environment was especially important, as it allowed students to approach professional challenges from diverse cultural perspectives and mindsets. I believe this experience is particularly valuable for careers in marketing and tourism," she emphasizes.
Reflecting on the teaching approaches at the foreign university, she notes that great attention was given to students' opinions.
"The lecturers encouraged discussions and structured courses to ensure active engagement. Like at YSU, the professors at Varna University of Management are highly qualified and experienced. At both universities, they stand out for their expertise, responsibility, and a friendly yet demanding approach to students," she says.
Anushik also introduced her classmates—from Europe and Asia—to key moments in Armenian history, Armenian culture and traditions, the country's cuisine, and its tourism potential.
She is currently working on her thesis, which focuses on marketing and service quality in the hospitality sector.
"This topic interests me because in modern tourism and hospitality, service quality and well-executed marketing strategies significantly impact an organization's success. My research aims to understand how hotels can deliver higher-quality services to clients and enhance their competitiveness in the market," she explains.
In her view, to meet labor market demands, it is crucial to attend lectures by industry professionals and to work on real projects at the university.
Alongside her studies, Anushik also works in customer service, applying theoretical knowledge in practice. She says this provides a valuable opportunity to better understand clients' needs and expectations.
The YSU student hopes to apply the knowledge she gained abroad specifically in the tourism and hotel services sector.
"This field is growing rapidly and plays a key role in countries' economic development," Anushik says, adding that she aims to contribute to the growth of Armenia's tourism sector in the future by applying international experience and innovative approaches.
