Program Overview

The Mediation and Conflict Resolution Certificate Program is an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented educational initiative offered by the Center for Continuing Education at Yerevan State University. Designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of conflict dynamics and resolution strategies, this program integrates theoretical foundations with hands-on skills to prepare learners for real-world challenges in conflict resolution and mediation. Through a blend of three interconnected courses—Conflict Research Methods, Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and Mediation in Practice—participants gain a robust toolkit to navigate, analyze, and resolve conflicts across diverse settings.

This program may serve a wide audience, including aspiring mediators, conflict resolution practitioners, social scientists, and professionals working in diplomacy, international organizations, NGOs, and corporate sectors. Whether you aim to advance your career or foster more harmonious interactions in your communities, this program offers essential knowledge and practical skills to transform conflicts into opportunities for growth and understanding.

The program is offered during Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters, spanning 20 weeks (3 classes per week, 80 minutes per class). The languages of instruction are Armenian and English (with some reading materials and class discussions also conducted in Russian).

Program Structure

The certificate program is structured around three interconnected courses, each contributing unique elements to the overall learning journey:

Course 1. Conflict Research Methods

This foundational course introduces participants to the conceptual and methodological tools necessary for understanding and researching social conflicts. Participants delve into: 

• Key Concepts – Nature, sources, and societal contexts of conflicts.
• Research Techniques – Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches.
• Interdisciplinary Insights – Enriching conflict analysis through perspectives from multiple disciplines.
• Ethical Research Practices – Upholding principles of confidentiality, informed consent, and cultural sensitivity.

The course lays the groundwork for identifying, analyzing, and interpreting conflict dynamics, enabling participants to design robust research studies and critically evaluate conflict-related phenomena. It serves as the analytical backbone of the program, setting the stage for more applied learning in subsequent courses.

Course 2. Conflict Analysis and Resolution

Building on the research foundation and stemming from theoretical grounds, this course provides a deep dive into the philosophical, social, and political dimensions of conflict. Key components include: 

• Theoretical Exploration – Examining seminal theories of conflict and their practical applications.
• Analytical Precision – Identifying root causes, dynamics, and implications of conflicts.
• Philosophical Integration – Situating conflict theories within broader intellectual traditions.
• Applied Case Studies – Bridging theory and practice through real-world scenarios.

This course focuses on critical thinking and interdisciplinary analysis, equipping participants with the intellectual tools to address complex conflicts across different scales, from interpersonal to international. It bridges the abstract understanding of conflict with actionable strategies for resolution.

Course 3. Mediation in Practice

The program culminates in this highly interactive and skills-focused course, where participants master the art of mediation. Core elements include: 

• Mediation Process – Understanding the stages of mediation, from preparation to closure.
• Communication Skills – Enhancing active listening, effective questioning, and non-verbal communication.
• Practical Applications – Role-plays and simulations to develop facilitation and negotiation skills.
• Ethical Mediation – Addressing power imbalances, confidentiality, and impartiality.

Learners apply the theoretical and analytical knowledge gained in the earlier courses to conduct mediation sessions, analyze outcomes, and reflect on personal mediation styles. This capstone course transforms theory into practice, fostering confidence and competence in conflict resolution.

These courses form a cohesive learning pathway, with each building on and reinforcing the others. 

Conflict Research Methods provides the analytical tools and ethical framework essential for understanding and exploring conflicts.

Conflict Analysis and Resolution deepens theoretical insights and connects them to broader socio-political contexts, preparing participants to devise and assess conflict resolution strategies.

Mediation in Practice operationalizes the knowledge and skills acquired in the earlier courses, enabling participants to implement practical solutions in real-world scenarios.

Program Requirements and Evaluation

The program assumes the following minimum requirements for enrollment:

1. Basic knowledge of social science research domains, including foundational concepts in sociology, political science, or psychology.

2. Familiarity with conflict theory and conflict analysis frameworks.

3. Basic math or statistics skills.

4. Experience in working with texts, including critical analysis of literature.

5. Eagerness and openness to peer-to-peer and group learning.

6. Adequate proficiency in the language of instruction to actively participate in discussions and comprehend reading materials.

To successfully complete the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Certificate Program, learners must meet the following requirements:

• Course Attendance – Regular attendance and active participation in all three courses.

• Engagement in Activities – Completion of individual assignments, group projects, and role-play simulations as specified in each course.

• Final Assessments – Successful completion of the final assessments for each course, which may include research projects, analytical essays, practical mediation sessions, or case study analyses.

Each course employs distinct evaluation methods tailored to its focus:

• Conflict Research Methods: Evaluated through research assignments, peer reviews, and analytical workshops.

• Conflict Analysis and Resolution: Assessed via critical response essays, class presentations, and take-home quizzes.

• Mediation in Practice: Graded on role-play simulations, reflective essays, and a comprehensive final mediation session.

Participants must achieve satisfactory performance in all courses to earn the certificate, demonstrating both theoretical understanding and practical competence.
