Organized by the Student Scientific Society (SSS) of YSU Faculty of Geography, a course titled "Mountaineering for Beginners-2" was held from April 7-13 of this year.
The training session was attended by approximately 30 students who had passed the interview stage, representing various faculties of YSU and other universities in Armenia. These participants were united by their shared interest in active engagement with nature, hiking, and mountaineering.
The first phase of the training included lectures on the following topics: "Orientation in the Terrain" (lecturer: Tatevik Safaryan, PhD, lecturer at YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology), "Mountain Hazards" (speaker: Ashot Topuzyan, founder of Trichq hiking club and member of the Armenian Mountaineering Federation), "Mountain Gear and Equipment" (speakers: hikers Aghvan Vardanyan and Kristine Safaryan), "Trail Construction and Its Role in Mountaineering" (speaker: Ashot Davtyan, founder of the Trail for Change), and "First Aid" (speaker: Irina Sindoyan).
The participants were introduced to the basic methods of orientation using maps and compasses, and were taught skills for orienting themselves through natural landmarks. The training also covered the primary hazards encountered in mountainous environments, such as sudden weather changes, rockfalls, and the presence of wild animals, along with strategies for preventing and overcoming these dangers. In addition, the participants were familiarized with the processes of designing and constructing trails, among other topics.
The second phase of the training took place in field conditions. Participants visited the Hrazdan Gorge, where they applied their orientation skills in the terrain and explored lesser-known geological features and natural springs in the area.
At the end of the training, the participants ascended the Apakekar Mountain (located in the Tavush Province, Armenia, 1651 meters above sea level). The hike was led by experienced hikers Aghvan Vardanyan, Kristine Safaryan, and Kenas Ter-Aristakesyan.
