Chair of Theory and History of Sociology

The Chair of Theory and History of Sociology was established in 2011. Its establishment provided an institutional framework for conducting fundamental sociological research and served as a stimulus for carrying out theoretical and historical-sociological studies alongside applied sociological research.

The main areas of the chair's academic and research activities include sociological theories, the history of sociology (particularly Armenian sociology), mid-level theories, identity issues, and spatial problems (urban and rural).

The academic staff are actively involved in scientific grant projects and have authored many research publications and educational manuals. Notable publications include "Anthology of Armenian Sociological Thought", "History of Armenian Sociology (Late 19th–Early 20th Century"), and "German Sociological Thought", all published by Yerevan State University. 

The chair maintains international cooperation with various scientific and educational institutions, including Humboldt University (Germany), University of Potsdam (Germany), University of Fribourg (Switzerland), University of Oxford (United Kingdom), Higher School of Economics (Russia), Mogilev State University (Belarus), Saint Petersburg State University of Economics (Russia), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia), and the Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, among others.

The Chair of Theory and History of Sociology is headed by Associate Professor Harutyun Vermishyan, PhD in Sociology.

It offers the "Sociology" bachelor’s program and the part-time "Human Resource Management" master’s program.
