About the Faculty

The training of economists at Yerevan State University dates back to 1921. In 1934, it was established as an independent faculty, operating in this capacity until 1975. From 1975 to 1983, the preparation of economists at the University was suspended due to the establishment of the Yerevan Institute of National Economy. In 1984, the faculty was reestablished under the name “Economic Cybernetics.” In 1991, it was renamed the Faculty of Economics, and in 2014, it received its current designation as the Faculty of Economics and Management.

The Faculty of Economics and Management is one of the oldest faculties of the University. It is among the highest-ranked educational institutions in Armenia and the region, where the education provided enables graduates to become competitive professionals not only in the Republic of Armenia but also worldwide. Since 1934, the Faculty has graduated tens of thousands of highly qualified specialists who, possessing excellent command of their profession, successfully and effectively work across various sectors of the economy, in the public administration system, as well as in research centers and universities.

Currently, approximately 1,300 students—including full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students, as well as doctoral candidates and applicants—are pursuing professional education at the University under various academic programs.

Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Economics and Management collaborates with both public authorities and private sector organizations, including the Government of the Republic of Armenia, ministries, state agencies, and the Central Bank. The Faculty’s academic and research potential is actively utilized in the development of strategic and programmatic documents across various branches of the Government of the Republic of Armenia. These include the Sustainable Development Program (adopted by a Government decision in 2008), the Strategic Program for the Prospective Development of the Republic of Armenia for 2014–2025 (adopted in 2014), the Concept of the Family Vulnerability Assessment System (adopted in 2024), the National Strategic Study on Food Security and Nutrition in Armenia (2018), the Progress Report on the Millennium Development Goals in Armenia (2010), and the Human Capital Study (2022).

In the course of its academic and research activities, the Faculty of Economics and Management of Yerevan State University also cooperates with international organizations, including the United Nations Office in Armenia, the World Bank, the Armenian Center of the International Scientific-Educational Center, and programs such as “TEMPUS ECESIS,” among others.

The Faculty operates a three-tier system of higher education, comprising bachelor’s degree programs (with a duration of four years), master’s degree programs (lasting 1.5 or 2 years, depending on the specific program), and doctoral studies (with a duration of three years).

The bachelor’s qualification provides graduates with broad opportunities to hold positions across various sectors of the economy, as well as within the public administration system and other fields of the country. Upon completion of the four-year program, graduates are awarded a state-recognized Bachelor’s degree in Economics or a Bachelor’s degree in Management, depending on the chosen academic program.

The master’s qualification entitles graduates to hold professional positions, including engagement in research activities that require advanced, specialized education in the field. The primary objective of master’s programs is to provide applicants with in-depth professional training. Upon completion of the program, graduates are awarded a state-recognized Master’s degree in Economics or a Master’s degree in Management, in accordance with the respective academic program.

At the Faculty of Economics and Management of Yerevan State University, instruction is delivered by leading specialists in the field, including professors, Doctors of Sciences, and Candidates of Sciences, as well as distinguished lecturers who have been awarded state honors of the Republic of Armenia and honorary titles in their professional domains.

In addition, the Faculty engages, on a part-time basis, practitioners from the public administration system of the Republic of Armenia, as well as experts from the financial and banking sector, representatives of leading organizations, public figures, and eminent scholars.

The four departments of the Faculty offer academic programs aligned with the demands of both national and international labor markets:

  • Department of Economics and International Economic Relations

  • Department of Mathematical Modeling in Economics

  • Department of Finance and Accounting

  • Department of Management and Business

Since 2002, based on the Faculty’s academic potential, a specialized council has been operating at Yerevan State University under the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Armenia, authorized to confer the scientific degrees of Candidate of Economic Sciences and Doctor of Economic Sciences.

In 2016, the Scientific-Analytical Center for Constitutional Economics was established at the Faculty. Its activities are aimed at conducting research on the monitoring and governance of constitutionalism, as well as addressing issues related to the institutional development of the economy, and proposing applied scientific solutions.

The main research directions of the Center include the diagnosis and assessment of the level of constitutionalism, the development and implementation of methods for collecting data for constitutionalism assessment databases, the elaboration of approaches to the commercialization of conducted research and generated databases, as well as the study of “Big Data” and “Data Science” methodologies and their potential applications within the field of constitutional economics.

The Faculty of Economics and Management of Yerevan State University maintains effective cooperation with both local and international research centers. International collaboration is regarded as a strategically important direction aimed at development and the continuous improvement of educational quality within the Faculty. The Faculty has been implementing international cooperation programs since 1993.

Yerevan State University (including the Faculty of Economics and Management) cooperates with more than 230 universities and research centers. Within the framework of numerous exchange programs, students of the Faculty have the opportunity to study at prestigious foreign universities and participate in international programs and projects.

Among the wide range of international cooperation initiatives, the Faculty provides students with extensive opportunities, including:

  • Student mobility within the framework of the “Erasmus+” program (starting from the second year of bachelor’s studies);

  • Student mobility within inter-university cooperation programs (starting from the second year of bachelor’s studies);

  • Opportunities for master’s students and doctoral candidates to continue their studies abroad through research grants and scholarships at international universities and research centers;

  • A double-degree master’s program with San José State University (SJSU, USA) in “Data Science in Business,” within which up to five students per year may continue their studies in the second year of SJSU’s “Data Analytics” program, receiving both an YSU and an SJSU diploma.

Student mobility is granted only on the basis of high academic performance and sufficient proficiency in foreign languages.

Yerevan State University also operates a “Business Incubator” structural unit, whose objective is to create an environment for the commercialization of outputs generated across various faculties, including the Faculty of Economics and Management.

It is aimed at fostering the generation and acceleration of ideas emerging within the university environment, transforming these ideas into scientific, educational, industrial, and technological outcomes, as well as providing support for the collection and development of innovative ideas.

In order to implement joint academic and research projects, organize professional and industrial internships, and facilitate students’ transition into the labor market, the Faculty actively cooperates with financial and banking institutions of the Republic of Armenia, public administration bodies, and private sector organizations.

Alongside the educational process, considerable attention is also devoted to students’ extracurricular life and activities. Students are provided with opportunities to participate in seminars, public lectures, study visits, extracurricular classes, and meetings with experienced professionals, public figures, eminent scholars, and representatives of the business sector, who share their extensive experience and knowledge with students.

The Faculty continuously keeps pace with modern developments by ensuring ongoing opportunities for the expanded and effective use of advanced educational technologies. Advanced tools aimed at improving the quality of education and modernizing the organization of the learning process are regularly introduced into academic activities.

Since 2023, a Wolfram programming language teaching laboratory has been operating at the Faculty. The Faculty has established a number of mechanisms that enable students to apply for tuition fee reimbursement. Students who demonstrate high academic performance during a given academic year are eligible for full or partial tuition fee compensation.

The Faculty is included in several financial support programs and cooperates with various institutions and organizations. In addition, named scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding students of the Faculty.

In recent years, the Faculty has graduated more than 400 students annually across various modes of study. These graduates are employed in the public sector, including ministries and government agencies of the Republic of Armenia, state administration and local self-government bodies, as well as the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, commercial banks, private enterprises, international reputable organizations, and other institutions.
