'For me, pursuing science is not just a profession, but a mindset': YSU student Hovhannes Tumanyan among the best in IT sector
Hovhannes Tumanyan, a student at Yerevan State University, has won a first-class award in the "Best Bachelor's Student" category at this year’s annual educational awards in the field of Information Technology (IT). He navigates the world of science and technology with confidence and purpose, combining his interests in physics, mathematics, and artificial intelligence. For Hovhannes, his profession is a key that unlocks the future — a path toward authoring innovations that may help shape the trajectory of technological development in Armenia.

Award Affirms Well-Chosen Path
Now in his fourth year of the "Data Processing in Physics and Artificial Intelligence" bachelor's program at YSU Faculty of Physics, Hovhannes explains that the competition required submission of a resume, letters of appreciation, and recommendation letters that reflected not only his academic excellence but also his active engagement in various programs and initiatives. This was followed by an interview phase, which focused not only on professional interests but also on applicants’ worldview.
Discipline, Determination, and Faith — Pillars of Success
When asked about the secret to his success, Hovhannes responds: consistency, discipline, and a willingness to face challenges without fear.
"I’ve learned to solve problems all the way through and not be intimidated by complexity. In addition, a constant curiosity for new knowledge, a strong sense of responsibility, and the support of my family have always helped me. And ultimately, 'The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord' (Sirach 1:1)," he shares.
IT as Indispensable Tool at Intersection of Science and Technology
Hovhannes notes that IT is not his primary area of interest. However, the academic program he is enrolled in is closely intertwined with artificial intelligence, which he considers a crucial and already indispensable tool in the sciences today.

"What interests me most in IT are artificial intelligence and robotics. These fields allow me to combine mathematical thinking, programming, and real-world applications. I think IT should become the primary driving force of Armenia’s economy. In particular, the application of AI and the development of high-tech manufacturing have great potential — provided there is a proper university environment, effective leadership, and support for the defense industry," he emphasizes.
Currently, Hovhannes applies his knowledge in projects as a researcher at the UAV Lab at the Center for Advanced Software Technologies (CAST).
"The lab integrates IT, physics, and mathematics — and I’m especially interested in interdisciplinary projects like these," says Hovhannes, who is currently exploring the applications of Software-Defined Radio (SDR) and artificial intelligence in UAV and communication systems.
Specialization, Motivation, and Vision for Future
Hovhannes recalls that his initial interest in science was sparked by its logical structure and clarity. His passion for physics deepened thanks to his teacher at the Physmath school named after A.Shahinyan — Mehak Hayrapetyan, Associate Professor at YSU Chair of General Physics and Astrophysics named after Academician Victor Hambardzumyan — who later became his lecturer at the university.
Speaking about university education, Hovhannes points out that the university holds great significance for him — not only as a source of knowledge, but also as a space for learning within an academic environment.
"For me, pursuing science is not just a profession but a mindset. And yes, I plan to stay in the field of science for the long term," he affirms, adding that he believes a modern young scientist must, above all, be a patriot.
When asked what motivates him to keep learning and growing every day, Hovhannes replies that it is the thought that each new piece of knowledge brings him closer to ideas that could become tomorrow’s technologies. As a future professional, his goal is to contribute to the advancement of high-tech development in Armenia, thereby supporting the country’s economic and political independence.
"This is one of the greatest goals of my life — and there is still much work to be done," concludes YSU student Hovhannes Tumanyan.
