YSU professor awarded Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal
A ceremony was held at Yerevan State University to present Professor Samvel Muradyan with the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal. The medal was bestowed upon the professor by the university rector, Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.
Professor Samvel Muradyan, Honorary Head of the Chair of History of Armenian Literature and Literary Theory at YSU Faculty of Armenian Philology, received the medal in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council and leadership of the European Academy of Natural Sciences. The Armenian Goethe Institute nominated Professor Muradyan for this award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of science.
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan extended his congratulations to Professor Muradyan and wished him continued fruitful activity. He emphasized that the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal has been awarded annually since 1955 to individuals who are not of German origin.
"Considering the meticulousness and rigor of the Germans, we can appreciate the importance of this medal. It was awarded to you for your scientific and literary contributions, which also promote the dissemination of European culture," he added.
In his speech, the rector noted that the Goethe Institute has long been actively engaged in Armenia, promoting German culture, language, and intercultural communication. YSU keeps close cooperation with the Goethe Institute, the German Embassy in Armenia, and German foundations engaged in scientific and educational activities.
Hovhannes Hovhannisyan also stated that Armenia’s educational system has been linked to the German educational system since the Soviet era. This tradition continues to this day: "Our renowned clergy and prominent figures have received their education in Germany since the early 20th century."
In expressing his gratitude, Professor Muradyan said the award came as a surprise. At the same time, he thanked YSU, stating: "I have received everything at the university, have always been proud of it, and have sought to contribute both to the education of generations studying at the university and to enhancing the reputation of the alma mater." He pledged to continue contributing to the university’s reputation.
