Data Processing Center opens at YSU; prime minister briefed on supercomputer capabilities
Yerevan State University officially inaugurated its new Data Processing Center, equipped with a government-funded supercomputer, with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in attendance. During his visit, the prime minister toured the university, familiarizing himself with technological and infrastructure projects, as well as initiatives aimed at developing YSU's research and educational potential.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Vice President of the National Assembly Hakob Arshakyan, Chairman of YSU Board of Trustees Suren Papikyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Minister of High-Tech Industry Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, and Chair of the MoESCS Higher Education and Science Committee Sargis Hayotsyan visited Yerevan State University to participate in the official opening of the Data Processing Center and to learn about the wide-ranging opportunities offered by the supercomputer.
The newly opened center will allow researchers to conduct various calculations and scientific studies by using the supercomputer. This powerful computational infrastructure is expected to strengthen national capacities in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, fostering scientific research, promoting innovative projects, and modernizing educational processes.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan asked about the supercomputer's capabilities, its potential users, and primary applications.
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan emphasized that the center opens up new opportunities for advancing the university's research potential. He noted that the computational infrastructure will enable complex research and calculations, promoting both scientific activity and educational modernization, while also facilitating innovative projects. This, he said, will further strengthen YSU's position as a leading center for science and education in the region.
Hrant Khachatryan, Head of the Machine Learning Laboratory at the YSU Center for Mathematical and Applied Research, spoke about the supercomputer and its artificial intelligence system. He highlighted its powerful computing capabilities and AI ecosystem, noting plans to develop new AI models capable of addressing complex and novel challenges, while also training the next generation of researchers and specialists in the field.
The rector emphasized the significance of the Armenian government’s investment, noting that it will greatly boost the university's research output. Last year, YSU published 711 scientific articles, and the investment is expected to further enhance research productivity and expand the university's capabilities.
The prime minister also visited the YSU Sarkis and Marie Izmirlian Library, where, with support from the Izmirlian Charitable Foundation, renovation work is underway. The first-floor lobby is being refurbished, the lighting system modernized, and a glass roof installed, creating an innovative, contemporary, and inspiring environment for students, academic staff, and researchers.
YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan noted that it will be one of the best library environments in Armenia, providing students with access to modern and comfortable educational facilities.
