YSU expands global network through new partnership with University of Crete
Yerevan State University continues to broaden its international engagement by strengthening academic and research ties with leading European institutions. In this context, the university has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the University of Crete, aimed at fostering multifaceted cooperation across academic, scientific, and cultural domains.
Renowned as one of Greece's premier public institutions, the University of Crete is distinguished by its rigorous academic standards and robust international engagement. The university currently hosts a vibrant academic community, comprising over 18,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate students. Its scholarly framework is supported by approximately 450 faculty members, complemented by adjunct lecturers, researchers, and specialized administrative staff.
The memorandum envisions promoting faculty and student exchange programs, implementing joint research initiatives, and facilitating the exchange of academic knowledge and scholarly publications. A primary objective is the expansion of international academic mobility, enabling students and researchers to immerse themselves in new educational and research environments, gain global experience, and broaden their professional networks.
The University of Crete is included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and, as of 2026, is placed in the 601–800 band among more than 2,000 universities worldwide. At the national level, it ranks among Greece's top-performing higher education institutions.
To strengthen its research capacity and international profile, the University of Crete became the first Greek university to endorse the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. It is also a member of the EURAXESS network, which supports researcher mobility and international scientific cooperation.
Advancing cooperation between Yerevan State University and the University of Crete is of particular importance to YSU's internationalization strategy. This partnership is expected to facilitate the creation of joint educational programs, increase the involvement of YSU researchers in European grant projects, and enhance the quality of both teaching and research. Furthermore, it will create new opportunities for early-career researchers to participate in international conferences, short-term study visits, and collaborative scientific initiatives.
