From research paper to publication: How YSU Academic Writing Center supports researchers
"I did not have extensive experience in scientific publishing, so I felt some uncertainty during my research process," says Pavlik Tshagharyan, a PhD student at the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology, Yerevan State University. Seeking to make his work more structured and evidence-based, he turned to the university's Academic Writing Center. He notes that his main challenges were related to the structure of academic texts, the selection of scholarly sources, and the clarification of research methodology—challenges that ultimately led him to seek support from the center.
I had begun a study on individual psychological competencies, which also involved the cross-cultural adaptation of a psychometric instrument—a questionnaire. After a long period of examining the issue, I obtained permission from the instrument's author, Stephen Bull, and decided to use the center's consultation services to make the adaptation process more effective. Despite my practical experience as a psychologist, I did not have extensive experience in scientific publishing, so I felt some uncertainty during the research process. I therefore sought assistance primarily to improve the structure of my work and to better organize the presentation of its scientific arguments.
I had a consultation session with Harutyun Vermishyan, PhD in Sociology, whose course "Methodology of Scientific Research" I was taking at the time, which also influenced my choice. The consultation proved effective, and all my questions were answered comprehensively.
With the center's support, my research became more structured, logically coherent, and academically grounded. In particular, my skills in constructing academic texts, selecting scholarly sources, and defining research methods and instruments were significantly refined.
A psychologist and contract officer at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia's Vazgen Sargsyan Military University, Major Pavlik Tshagharyan arrived at Yerevan State University in military uniform. In an interview with us, he spoke about his decision to turn to the YSU Academic Writing Center. The YSU PhD student, whose research focuses on the impact of mastering psychological regulation strategies on the effectiveness of personnel training, actively participates in seminars organized by the center.
In particular, he highlights a lecture by Professor Victor Agadjanian from the University of California, on the topic "Publishing Academic Research," describing it as especially informative and practically valuable.
Emphasizing the importance of such meetings for young researchers, Tshagharyan suggests expanding the number of thematic seminars and regularly updating practical guidelines and materials to make them more accessible and useful for independent researchers.
He worked with Associate Professor Harutyun Vermishyan, Head of the Chair of Sociology Theory and History at the YSU Faculty and a consultant at the center. Vermishyan notes that young researchers often need individual consultations on a wide range of issues—from proper citation formatting to selecting appropriate journals and structuring academic articles.
"The most frequently asked questions concern how to write articles that meet the standards of internationally peer-reviewed journals," he says, emphasizing the importance of developing methodological thinking.
According to him, researchers often lack confidence in their chosen methods or struggle to connect research data with conclusions. Vermishyan adds that one-hour consultations are primarily advisory in nature and aim to develop not only academic literacy but also critical thinking. In many cases, he believes, one or two meetings are sufficient to guide a researcher in the right direction, while further progress depends largely on the student's independent and consistent work.
Anna Poladyan, also a consultant at the center, supports students and young researchers in producing high-quality academic texts. The head of the Chair of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology at the YSU Faculty of Biology notes that her work involves guidance across nearly all key stages of the research process.
She emphasizes that it is not only the choice of topic that matters, but also the clear formulation of its relevance and scientific novelty, as well as the proper definition of research aims and objectives. According to her, researchers must be able to substantiate their ideas and formulate coherent and convincing conclusions.
Speaking about the most common challenges faced by those who seek support from the center, she notes that many struggle to define a clear objective or select an appropriate topic. Requests for assistance also frequently concern data analysis, argument construction, and justification of ideas. In addition, young researchers turn to the center for guidance on publishing in international peer-reviewed journals, as well as on preparing and submitting local and international grant applications.
"Very often, only facts are presented without a critical analysis based on the relevant literature. In other cases, the conclusions do not follow from the presented data. Paragraphs frequently lack logical sequencing; colloquial expressions or non-academic vocabulary are used in the text, and there is insufficient use of recently published literature, all of which hinder the production of high-quality academic work," the consultant explains.
Recently, the center's activity has intensified, which, according to Armen Sargsyan, Director of the YSU Doctoral Education Center, is due to expanded outreach efforts. He notes that through seminars, lectures, and individual consultations, the center contributes to the development of academic writing skills among PhD students and researchers, while also broadening its user base and supporting the university's strategic goals.
"At all stages of the center's activities, there are strong priorities stemming from its mission. However, taking into account the challenges we have identified and areas requiring improvement, we are currently focusing on ensuring proper outreach on the center's activities, diversifying services, expanding the circle of beneficiaries and consultants, and enhancing the quality of strategic planning," he emphasizes.
The center regularly organizes a wide range of courses and seminars led by both Armenian experts and professors invited from different countries, contributing to the international exchange of expertise.
Outlining the center's strategic goals for the coming years, Sargsyan states: "We aim to gradually make the consulting system more specialized, expanding it with internationally recognized experts. In addition, we consider it important to enhance YSU's visibility on international platforms."
