YSU brings young geologists together again as second phase of Young Geologist School begins
The second phase of the Young Geologist School has begun as part of cooperation between the YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology and the Kapan Mining and Processing Company. Over the next 11 weeks, 63 school students from different regions of Armenia will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of geology, develop practical skills, explore different areas of the profession, take part in field trips, and engage in educational and hands-on activities.
A total of 76 students had initially expressed interest in participating in the second phase of the program. They took part in an online introductory interview, during which they learned about the course content, format and upcoming activities.
A distinctive feature of the program is that instruction is organized simultaneously from several locations, allowing students from different regions of Armenia to participate in the courses.
Students from Yerevan and nearby regions attend classes at the GEO LAB Center of the YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology. Participants from Syunik Province join the classes online from the training center of the Kapan Mining and Processing Company, while students from Lori Province participate from H. Meliksetyan Secondary School in Shnogh.
On the first day of the course, participants were introduced to the program's objectives, structure and organizational format. Shahen Khachatryan, Associate Professor at the Chair of Regional Geology and Mineral Exploration at YSU, then delivered a lecture titled "Geology as a Profession and the Role of Geologists in the World: Career and Motivation."
A total of 63 students participated in the first session from different locations: 22 at the YSU GEO LAB Center, 14 in Kapan and 27 in Shnogh.
The Young Geologist School is a platform for career guidance and science education aimed primarily at deepening knowledge of geology among students in grades 9-12 by combining theoretical instruction with practical work.
The school is designed to create an engaging, science-oriented and experiential learning environment where students can explore their surroundings, discover the laws of nature, develop research thinking and gain new knowledge in earth sciences and related fields.
Career guidance is also an important component of the program. The courses give participants a clearer understanding of the geology profession, its practical significance, career opportunities, and possible paths for further education and professional development.
Participants will also receive certificates of participation upon completion of the program.
The second phase of the Young Geologist School marks another important step toward strengthening cooperation between YSU and the business community, supporting career guidance for school students and fostering interest in geology among young people.
