February 9 is observed as World Greek Language Day.
The day has been celebrated since February 9, 2017, in honor of the great Greek poet Dionysios Solomos, the author of Greece's national anthem.
In November 2025, the General Conference of UNESCO officially recognized February 9 as World Greek Language Day, highlighting the unique role of the Greek language in global cultural and educational heritage.
On this occasion, events dedicated to the Greek language are organized in countries with Greek diaspora communities as well as in countries where the teaching of Greek has a long-standing tradition.
