Associate Professor Mikayel Malkhasyan, PhD in History, from the Chair of Armenian History at Yerevan State University, participated in the 6th Conference of the European Society of Historical Demography (ESHD), held from September 9 to 13 this year at the University of Bologna, Italy.
This was the first time Armenia had a representative at this prominent academic forum, and that representative was from Yerevan State University.
During the session dedicated to innovative methodologies, Mikayel Malkhasyan delivered an oral presentation. The conference provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences with international experts and establish new scientific collaborations.
On the same day, the ESHD General Assembly convened, offering participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with the organization’s current activities and future plans.

Mikayel Malkhasyan emphasized the significance of a lecture by Professor Massimo Livi Bacci, one of the founders of historical demography. In a personal discussion with Professor Livi Bacci, they explored the distinctive features of Armenian historical demography in comparison to European models. The scholar noted that Livi Bacci’s research has been a guiding influence in shaping his academic career since his student years.
Participation in the conference is an important prerequisite for the further integration of Yerevan State University and Armenian historical demography into the European academic environment.
It is important to highlight that Mikayel Malkhasyan’s participation in the conference was made possible with the support of H. Hovnanian Family Foundation.
