Chair of History, Theory, and Practice of Journalism
The department was founded in 1999 under the name Department of History and Theory of the Press. In 2017, it was renamed the Department of New Media and Communications. In September 2025, at the Yerevan State University (YSU) Board of Trustees’ decision, the department adopted its current name, the Department of History, Theory, and Practice of Journalism. Since 2007, the department has been headed by David Petrosyan, D.Sc., Professor.
The department employs both associate professors and professors with extensive scientific and pedagogical experience, as well as young specialists – authors of monographs, readers, and scientific articles. Some of the professors participate in international and national grant programs.
The purpose of the department is to provide a high-level educational process and training for specialists with fundamental knowledge in the history and theory of journalism, as well as modern professional skills.
The department conducts research in the history and theory of journalism, promotes the development of students’ practical competencies, regularly updates its educational courses, and introduces modern methods and technologies. The department cooperates with specialized departments at foreign universities and with leading media and journalistic organizations in Armenia.
The department offers bachelor’s degree programs in Journalism (full-time and part-time) and a Master’s degree program in Television Journalism (full-time).
