New scientific collaboration established between YSU and University of Bari
Anahit Shirvanyan, a junior researcher at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Bioenergetics, and Biotechnology at YSU Institute of Biology, has conducted a three-month research project at the University of Bari Aldo Moro (Italy) within the framework of the "Professional Training-2025" program of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.

The research was conducted under the supervision of Professor Nicoletta Guaragnella, whose scientific interests focus on the study of stress factors and aging processes in yeasts. Anahit Shirvanyan's research aimed to uncover the mechanisms of acetic acid-induced stress. Additionally, the stress responses related to different carbon sources were studied, and the activity of enzymes was determined.

"Part of the research was carried out at the University of Bari, while some methods were introduced and further developed at YSU. The results are currently being compiled into an article, which we intend to submit for publication in one of the peer-reviewed international journals," says Anahit Shirvanyan.
The three-month research project at the University of Bari also highlighted the significance of international collaboration. According to the researcher, the team demonstrated great willingness to exchange knowledge and experience.
"Their approaches and the new methods they applied have greatly contributed to my professional growth. The team has decades of experience in yeast research, whereas at YSU, we have been working in this field for the past 3-4 years," she notes.

As a result of the research trip, new avenues for collaboration have been identified. Student exchange visits under the Erasmus+ program are planned, as well as joint research projects. Moreover, an agreement has been reached for one of the PhD students from the University of Bari to visit YSU for a six-month training program.
"Such programs are extremely important, especially for young scientists. They not only provide an opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills but also help to present the university to the international scientific community and advance the field of science in Armenia," emphasizes Anahit Shirvanyan.
