From mathematics to space exploration: International conference held at YSU
An international conference titled "Stochastic, Integral Geometry, and Related Fields" is being held at YSU Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, in collaboration with the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
The conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working with random geometric objects, and to promote the development of stochastic geometry as well as related fields, including the theory of point processes, integral geometry, stereology, spatial statistics, stochastic and integral geometry, and other applied disciplines.
Professor Viktor Ohanyan, Head of the Chair of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, emphasized that the international conference on stochastic and integral geometry was first organized in Armenia in 1985 at the initiative of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.
"That conference was held in Sevan, with the opening ceremony conducted by Academician Viktor Hambardzumyan, President of the Academy. Now, at Yerevan State University, we have organized the second international conference on this topic. Thirty-four researchers from abroad, including from Iran, Germany, France, Russia, India, and Switzerland, have been invited," the professor noted, highlighting that the studies discussed at the conference are aimed at benefiting a number of fields, including medicine and space exploration.
The conference also includes participation from master’s and PhD students arriving from Saint Petersburg. Viktor Ohanyan pointed out that he discussed potential cooperation opportunities with Dmitry Zaporozhets, Deputy Director of the Saint Petersburg Department of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and that in the near future, two students from YSU Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics will have the opportunity to study free of charge for one to two months in Saint Petersburg.
Professor Ilya Molchanov from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science in Bern presented the results of his recent research related to stochastic geometry and certain problems in probability theory. Highlighting the importance of holding the conference, he noted that it brought together researchers from countries that, due to the current geopolitical situation, do not maintain collaboration in the scientific and educational fields.
"It is truly pleasant to have the opportunity for face-to-face interaction with researchers living in countries that do not cooperate due to political reasons," he said, adding that he is always ready to collaborate with YSU.
Sergey Dashyan, a researcher at the University of Lille in France specializing in the statistics of random processes, will present the findings of his research on the localization of radioactive sources.
"Over the past six years, together with various researchers (including those from Russia and France), we have published numerous articles in international scientific journals on the topic of radioactive source localization. Detectors placed in different locations receive signals from a single source. Based on the signal, one must determine the source’s location. From a mathematical perspective, this is quite interesting. Engineers have worked on it for a long time, though not with sufficient precision. The role of mathematicians is to develop a more accurate theoretical framework," Sergey Dashyan said.
He emphasized that interactions with scientists from different parts of the world offer a great opportunity for exchanging experiences: "Conferences are very important for researchers to showcase their work, learn about others’ research, and thus contribute to the advancement of science."
